Default Dang It!

A bunch of us was out flying today. I was flying my kit built 4 Star 0n it`s 12th flight when a guy unloads his planes. One of my flying buddies tells him that we both have the same channels . Right in front of the guys he turns his radio on an locks my radio out. I yell who in f#$% is on 22 and I look over my shoulder and the guys running to the car trying to hide his radio. He swears he did`nt turn on his radio all the while the guys are saying you did to we just saw you do it. Then the guy drags his other radio out that I have the posted on the freq broad and starts messing with that.
Thats when I explained to him how hard it would be to go to the bathroom , after I rearranged his body parts. I really wanted a piece of this guy. But I`m proud of myself , I torn my planes down , loaded up the truck and left the guy with all his body parts intact.
There is a bright side, guess I`m not his first victim and he pulled this in front of the wrong people this time.
I realize mistakes happen, believe me I pulled my share of boners, but I own my mistakes . If I had done that to a fellow flyer , I would have felt knee high to a grasshopper.
I catch a lot of crap on here , because I believe in following the rules. But if he had followed the rules , I would`nt be out a 500 dollar airplane and he would still be a member in good standing.
Thanks for letting me vent, I`m better now lol . I`m still trying to figure out how a big burly guy like me , fells so bad about losing my toy plane. You would`nt believe how good that plane flew. Wonder if thats why ARF`s are so popular ?

Because they are yours and you have the right to get ticked even if they are a simple paper airplane.

LOL your right ! The papers easy to find, but the paper clip for balnce can be a problem. And landing gear just don`t seem to go with this plane.

Wow, I can't imagine somebody being such an ignorant A55 that they shoot down another pilot like that! If your friends told him you were on his channel and he turned his radio on anyway, you're a better Christian than me if he got away unscathed.

What I can't believe is that he didn't want to come clean about it. Mistakes happen, and that's where personal responsibility comes in. People make really bizarre choices at times.

Last Saturday I was out at the field, and it was a particularly busy day for us. Six of us were flying (yeah, that's busy) and a few more were just there. One of the older fellows has a helicopter, and absolutely no common sense. A few years ago we were on the same frequency, and I switched all of my stuff once I found that out. This guy has poor judgment, and I didn't want to deal with that potential situation. Anyway, that Saturday I was flying, and he decides to fly his helicopter. He can't do anything more than hover, and chooses to do so at the approach end of the active runway! We have two very wide runways. I walked over and suggested that he move to the end of the inactive runway, where we could be sure there wouldn't be any chance of any problems. He wanted to argue about it! I told him to move it in no uncertain terms, and instead he walked back to the pits and waited until I was done. Simple, simple common sense and courtesy seem to be in short supply at times!

I've had someone accidentally turn on on the same channel while I was flying but they turned it off immediately after I yelled. They came up and sincerely apologized afterward too. If I were that guy, I would offer to do whatever I could to get you a new plane and any gear that got damaged. Trying to deny it is just stupid.

Robbie,

Sorry you had to run into such a stupid son of a gun. That really sucks. Are there many dark alleys in your neck of the woods? A guy like that should be banned!

I fly at a small field without a freq. board. And this is always a worry of mine. Even though there are only about 3-5 guys that use the field regularly. And we all know each others equipment. I worry about the time we get a visitor and you don't know his equip.

Sorry again,

Del

Bruce,

I can understand doing that for revenge but my luck would land the guys plane at the picnik table with spectators. (But it is a great thought)

It was suggest to me but, it would gain nothing , but to bring myself down to his level. I`m human and the thought did crossed my mind just for a sec. I`d feel worse about myself for being like him.

I fly with a great bunch but no matter where you go , you run into these types. The best thing we can do for our hobby , is not be like them.
Did I mention ? that was a sweet 4 star? lol

Ya might have mentioned it. Is there any hope for a repair?

I got a Super Sportster 60 that I have to put gear in and make the covering my own and it is good to go. Hopefully it flies as good as a 4*. I've heard it should. Maybe by next weekend?

Every field has at least one of those guys. We had a guy out Sunday with a ducted fan. Nice looking plane, but loud, really loud. It was large plane, about a 60" delta. He was making low passes and a few of them went right over the flight line. On one he had to look straight up to see the plane. Then he flew way out and came screaming in on a low run broad side to the runway, right at the pits. I'll give him one more chance then we pull his plug.

A few months back, I lost by toy. It was a home built sorta. The wing was off a trainer I trashed and the fuselage was home deisgned. It was a really good flying plane. I was still on the buddy box and I had the plane out a ways and high, staying away from one of the guys flying his pattern plane close in. Suddenly, my plane rolled over and went straight down like a lawn dart, not to be seen for another four months. After my instructor and I waded mud in the farm filed and tried to find a way into the creek bed it crashed in, we gave up and went back to the field. One of the older guys was there showing off his favorite old radio, an very early computer job. He was showing me all the settings he could do and then showed me how he could switch from Chan 26 to 56 with just a flick of a switch. He did this with the transmitter powered up, and my card still hanging on 56. I've always wondered if he was showing off to someone else when my plane took the dive. I'll never know, but you know, he hasn't been back to the field since.

Last, I was walking my 4*-60 out to the line a few days back when one of the guys got screwed up with his helicopter and came along the flight line, about four foot high and inverted. He ended up as a pile of parts in the center of the runway. He missed me by about four feet I'm guessing. While he was picking up parts, I was shaking brown stuff out of my pant legs.

By the way, build another 4*. Like you, I love the way it flys. It also buidls really fast. The biggest problem I have with mine is mis-judging how far out I am on approach. I did all of my training with a 60" wing span so the 4* looks a lot closer than it really is. On my first solo for qualifying, I put it down before I even cleared the fence at the end of the runway, thinking I was a good 100ft closer than I was. That one snapped the fuselage right behind the wing. I was back in the air a couple days later and managed to get certified, but I'm still miss-judging how far out I am. More practice I guess.

Don

Well, my story had a better ending. I was very new to flying, on my 4th or 5th flight on my Avistar. I lost all radio communication and down it went, destroyed. Walking back to the pits with my armload of balsa, a fella comes up and asks me what channel I was on. I told him only to have him tell me he shot me down. He'd been out of flying for a long time and forgot the rules. Anyway, he had 5 planes with him and he told me I could have my choice. I wasn't interested in any of them so he asked me how much cash I wanted. I told him the plane was $100.00 and he reached in his pocket , handed me $105.00, and said, "you'll need glue." I thought he handled it well.......took his $105.00 and put it into a 4*......which went down sometime later due to causes that can't be attributed to somebody else!

If you don't have a frequency board, how about everyone gets a t-shirt with their channel number in large letters on the back?

Well, if your a Really BIG Burly guy, I'd be lyin my ***** off too[&:], on my way to the truck to get out of dodge..Naaah I wouldnt do that really..I'd be po'd that I did something stupid like that and have to buy you at least a kit, and maybe we'd build it over a couple of beers and end up good flying buds...course on the whole other end of that spectrum, there would be the guy who would expect a new plane engine and radio, the fuel he lost, the gasoline he wasted getting there and $1000 for emotional damages and another $1000 for his labor to build the plane....trust me these people do exist I have a good friend like that, he lives out in the country and some neighbors cows got lost, walked through his flower bed , up on his deck, pooped a few places, no damage really just made a mess,...I dont know how he came to this figure, but he wanted $6000 in damages[X(]....I dont know what he ever got, but I never asked again either......Rog

seems that your club has some issues inforcing frequency control.the sad part about this is there is a new type of flyer that either don't care or do not understand the consequenses of their actions.you may even have recourse thru small claims if you can prove rules violation and that he did turn on his radio after being warned.legal remedies are safer than revenge as you get to go home after court.Good luck and anything is repairable ,given time and money.

Don`t worry Minn , I don`t think think he can make it. I may not make it , I`m down to one plane , a Twist ARF. Pulled the radio and eletronics out of the highwings a week or so ago . And gave the trainer to a newbie to learn on. And have nothing that I can finish with out a lot of hours and don`t have the heart to build with the weather so nice.

ClarkFlyer , Thanks for sharing your story . Just proves you can make a mistake and do it with class. I would fell better about the whole thing, with just a heart felt sorry. We both brought 2 radois and they were both on the same channels. After the 4 Star went in , I had the Twist on the run up stand and my card on the channel and sure enough , he starts working on his plane thats on that channel . Just not my day. I was packing up , so I did make it home with one plane.

flyinrog I asked him for nothing but the same common courtesy that was shown to him. If he had there would a been a few beers and a good story to tell.

I keep telling myself over and over, {no one got hurt and it was`nt the Corsair. which will sit till I can raise the funds for a 2.4 g.
ARFs are in my future plans for the summer.

Thanks for all the replys, I was just about to give flying but now I`m determined to get the Hanger back together.

We have a guy like that at our field. When he comes rolling in, several people will pack up and leave. He has been known to flip his radio on and off for the heck of it. He's not mean, he just doesn't think. We are going to take up a collection and give him a spektrum.

I was out to the field this morning and there were three of us regulars, and a guy we hadn't seen before. Soon, a couple more cars showed up and it was some more new members. Planes are comming out and my card is still the only one on the board ( the other two regular guys fly heilocoptors on 2/4GHZ) I started making the rounds of the new guys, introducing myself and asking them what channel they were on. 2.4GHZ was the answer. SO, we made a quick modification to the frequency board and a hand written note to hang your card on the Ham pegs if you were flying 2.4. There were ten pegs and eight of them filled up and until later in the morning, I was still the only one with a card in the 72MHZ slots. It isn't hard to see the future of the Frequency boards is it?

We had been talking about setting up a board for the 2.4 guys so we could at least get a count of cards and transmitters that matched. It sure makes you uneasy to see guys with transmitters in hand and no cards indicating the channel. At least now, we can tell if everyone "logged in".
