RE: Mistake?
ORIGINAL: B Trimble gunfighterII,the instructions claim it has a 40A ESC. The battery is a 650 mah, 9.6v 8 cell Ni-Mh. After using the two hour wall charger the battery got warm, after the 1/2 3/4 throttle run down it was almost too hot to touch. Today,I charged it on my Super Brain, after about 15 min. I meandered out to take a peak and the charger showed 3/4 charge and almost 11v! Now I'm kinda new to electrics, but that didn't seem normal so I unplugged it,and it was hotter than hell, and you could hear it (battery) making like a gurgling noise. It didn't leak or anything,so about a half hour later I tried it in the plane. Still works, full throttle sounds the same, but the plane will not stay in the air.Even hand launching it,it just glides to the ground at full throttle. I'm hoping it's due to the battery, just under powered. Forming a charge should be done very slowly at 1/10 the capacity of the battery for about 12 hours. ie... Your 650 mah battery should be charged at around 65ma. The charger that came with your model has a rate over 300ma to charge in 2 hours. (I am not a fan of fast charging NiCad or NiMh batteries) |
RE: Mistake?
Thanks Missileman, you just answered one of my questions. I try to find answers to my questions before I post too much, but the search feature seems to be working against me! What would cause the battery to get so damn hot whilst charging and running the motors? Like I said, the plane won't fly at all, like theres no power.Although, the motors sound like full rpm. Could it be a dead cell or something? Or just not enough motor(s) for the plane?
|
RE: Mistake?
Batteries do get warm when reaching full charge and high discarge rates, if the battery can handle it, can get a battery real hot.You should let the battery cool completely before charging.
Competition electric flyers actually have special cooling boxes to put their batteries in after flight. Not enough power? can't answer that question, cheap motors? cheap battery? combination of the two? |
RE: Mistake?
Got mine today. Wondering how long it take for their special glue to set. Have the battery on the charger so far about 30 min and it does not feel warm.
|
RE: Mistake?
Missleman is correct about fast charging Nicd and Nimh batts.
At what rate did you charge on the super brain? try a c/5 rate, about 120ma A 650 Mah battery in a 2 motor plane on a 40 amp ESC would seem to me as being way too little. Does the ESC say it's lipo compatible? |
RE: Mistake?
gunfighterII,I don't believe it's lipo compatible.What should I look for when buyng a replacement/upgrade battery?More volts,Mah,or a combo of both? LHS has ones that will fit,but it is 7.2 instead of 9.6,and 1300 Mah instead of 650.
goirish, the glue takes awhile to set up. |
RE: Mistake?
You need both.
I'm checking with a friend on the other thread who might have experience with this plane. I'll get back to you. You might have damaged the battery when it got so hot on the wall charger, I would toss that aside and use your super brain and try to cycle it several times as see what kind of capacity you have. |
RE: Mistake?
Good deal. I have cycled it a few times, I usually just plug and play but I set the amps at 1.0 and the mV at 10. I have no Idea what that means as I have no understanding of all this, but the battery seems to have a little more oomph to it and it only gets WARM while charging now.
|
RE: Mistake?
B,
I see you visited the other thread, I put a post up to see if some of the guys could help you out. Keep checking back. 1 post did'nt have much good to say, but have faith, they have the answers. it will fly. |
RE: Mistake?
gunfighterII,thanks. I get his point,he had a bad experiance, I knew I was buying a cheap foamie with even cheaper electronics, but I do plan on upgrading it. I just love the looks of this bird, and have wanted one for awhile now. Too bad GWS discontinued theirs or I would have bought that one.
|
RE: Mistake?
If all else fails I'll use my Super Rooster and the modified max motors out of my TXT-1! Then I won't be under powered! Except,I still need a good schooling on batteries and such.[:o]
|
RE: Mistake?
oh no, I was just reading the new posts... I sure hope it's just a fluke I passed on buying the T-28 to get the A-10. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
|
RE: Mistake?
Well,sportrider_fz6, The radio gear does suck! Not 1000 ft. range, more like 100. On top of that,I think,no I know, it is WAY under powered. Can't get it off the ground! On the upside,if you are a fan of the A-10,I think it's a nice decent built model. But it does need major help,at least mine does. Good luck
|
RE: Mistake?
I was just looking at the nitro website again it says the ESC is a 25a the battery is a 8.4 volt 650mah. it also says it has rudder control which we know it doesn't. (thrust vectoring?)
|
RE: Mistake?
The esc doesnt say, however the instructions say: 40A ESC,9.6v-650mAH Ni-MH battery, and no it is not thrust vectoring, steers with ailerons in the air and front wheel on the ground.I like the bird, but everything else is,well, really not up to par.
|
RE: Mistake?
I got a question, is the ESC seperate from the receiver?
|
RE: Mistake?
yes! thank god
|
RE: Mistake?
OK I have another question. I have the LP5DSM TX that came with my CX2, trying to be cheap do you think if I bought a AR6000 RX I could bind it with my TX and use it in the A-10? the guys at my LHS claim the TX has a two mile range (but I doubt it) but it still should be long enough range to fly the A-10. what do you think?
|
RE: Mistake?
Now your losing me,I have no idea about that stuff,I still use AM TX........ I will tell you that all you bought was the A-10. The radio is junk, least mine is, and it is way under powered. Nice looking bird though. and I think it has plenty potential.
Good luck. |
RE: Mistake?
I'll bet that if you merely change out the batteries for LiPo's it will cease to be underpowered.
|
RE: Mistake?
Haven't had mine in the air yet but it does seem to have good thrust. It went together well. The rx and the controll are seperate. It does say 40a on the bec and 9.6v on the battery. I have to use the charger that came with it as I don't have the right kind of adapter to use my other equipment. Any suggestions. And yes it does steer on the ground with a steerable nose wheel powered by it's own servo. I did not use the glue that came with it, I used epoxy instead. I was able to hold the motor pods on without having to use the tape. Used regular canopy glue with rubber bands until the canopy dried. Looks good. If the wind is not blowing 90mph I will try it out today. Left the gear off so I could land in the snow.
|
RE: Mistake?
Sounds good, hope you have better luck than myself. I haven't given up yet,I like it too much!
|
RE: Mistake?
If I changed to LiPo's would I need to change the RX. I have a LiPo compatible BEC that I could use. I have a 11.1v LiPo. 1300Mah. Do I need to get something smaller.
|
RE: Mistake?
I probably will change the RX that way I can use my regular TX. I have a small postage stamp Berg 4 channel RX.
|
RE: Mistake?
ORIGINAL: goirish If I changed to LiPo's would I need to change the RX. I have a LiPo compatible BEC that I could use. I have a 11.1v LiPo. 1300Mah. Do I need to get something smaller. The ONLY difference in a ESC for Nicad/NiMh and Lipo is the cutout voltage, where the engine will quit letting you know it is time to land so you don't over discharge your battery which can ruin a lipo. |
