Second Plane

Hey guys,

I had already posted a thread about the GP Ultra sport as a second plane. But I am still having a hard time deciding. That is why I set up this poll.

How long have you been flying your trainer?

I flew the Tiger Trainer for about a year and am now doing aerobatics on it. My Senorita was completed in April but recently met a tree which is no longer among the world of the living. But the Senorita is back flying again (I got twelve succesful flights on it on Thursday!)

You forgot to put the Super Sportster in your poll. That would get my vote. ;)

Actually, the Tiger, 4* or Somethin' Extra would also be decent second planes. (Don't know enough about the others to say.)

How about the Great Planes Easy sport, which GP themselves say is a good second plane?

Super Sportster

13yroldpilot,

I have to go with DBCherry the great planes super sportster is a great second plane. I am flying a sportster with a k&b 40 and a 11/5 prop. It will slow down and float in. Do you want an arf or are you going to build? If I had to choose from your poll it would be the tiger.

I just checked out that Super Sporster. That is pretty darn nice.
Who else likes the super Sporster?

Hi 13yroldpilot.

I built the Somethin' Extra as my second plane and the Super Sportster as my third. If you want a plane that will do some fun 3D stuff, you might want to go with the Somethin' Extra.(but start out with low rates) If you want a plane for more "pattern type" flying, the Sportster will work great. I like them both for these two reasons. I think the Sportster is a nicer looking plane, but the SE is more fun to "fling around". As kits, I found the SE a little easier to build than the Sportster, mainly due to the need to shape the nose for the Sportster. (not a big deal tho) For power, I installed OS 46FX's in each plane, but this year I've installed Webra 50s to give them a little more "oomph"... ;) I think either of these would make nice second planes...Len

Hello, the better plane is not in your list!
I would recommand you without any doubt the GP Super sporter 40 with a 46FX on the nose.

1) very good low wing trainer
2) You have to learn to take off with a tail wheel
3) That plane can do easily the basic IMAC and pattern sequence.
4) I won the 1 st position in my local IMAC competition with the GPSS, in the basic sequence. All other pilots had big birds like Extra, Cap etc...
5) move the CG 1/2 inch behind recommanded on the plan and you can do some 3D stuff.
6) Something Extra is'nt a second step trainer but a 3D plane.

Whats your flying style (pattern, sport, 3D)?? That would help decide...

I built a SPAD(brick), it was fast, easy, and cheap. When my tower 46 engine died, it flew like a brick. After that I built a combat, then recovered a old scat cat 500. I would rcomend, if you have the time, to build a kit. The four star would work good. I am not sure how much building experice that you have. Think about that first.

I went with an Ultra Stick as my second. I love it. Very aerobatic (compared to the trainer) and still very easy to fly.

I would have to say the BTE Venture60. You can't do any better for kit quality or flying quality. It is my second plane (much like the 4* series) and my favorite.

By the way, I didn't know this plane existed until I found this web site.

Hi. Thanks, my flying style is that of doing any and all aerobatics that my plane can handle.

My pic wasn't shown here. It is a World Models Super Sportster 40. This is an excellent second plane and it flies almost like a trainer. Good Luck.

Go with the poll and get the 4*. I have a 4*60 and it is a great second plane. Super sportster and world models super stunts are also great choices.
