Default Loctite

Bought a new cooling head for an O.S. Engine. When putting the screws back in do you use loctite (blue) to hold them in place?

Thanks.

No, there is no need for that.

No, do NOT locktite engine head screws or else you will have problems taking them out again. Just do them tight enough and they will stay that way

Be careful not to tighten them too much. The little 2.6mm screws used in an RG, and some others, don't have a lot of depth for the wrench to fit into, and strip out fairly easy. The last couple of rebuilds on my RG's, I had to remove the screws with a left hand drill bit.

use the star method to tighten them and leave them, they have a tendency to cook themselves in place

DO NOT use any loctite or the screws will probably never come out again

When engine is hot, loctite swoop down on screws

When engine is cold, screws will probably never come out

Thus do not use loctite on the engine!

Don't over tighten either! the best thing to do is to tighten with the star pattern first then start her up. Check for smoke or fuel leaks around bottom of head, if so tighten the screw on the side of the leak some more, check for leaks again. Once head is straight and level with no leaks tighten all screws about 1/16-1/8 tighter and thats it. I strippeed out 2 screw holes and had to re-tap with the head turned 90 degrees, not fun.
