Default Reading Glowplug

Hi guys,

Just got a question for you guys on reading glow plugs.

First off, I'm running the AE .15X with 30% using an O.S. #8 plug. This apply to most engines, since its really more of a question on tuning, rather than the actual engine itself.

I've read some stuff about "reading your glow plug", but never really found an in-depth explanation of how to read it.

After a few tanks running my GT2, I notice that the first coil or two on the glow plug doesn't turn red-hot as the rest of the coils deeper inside. What is this telling me? What is causing this? What is the optimal look for a glow plug when the engine is properly tuned, and how would I need to tune my engine for the glow plug to read optimally?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The whole glow plug coil isnt supposed to glow, the only time the whole thing glows is when it is inside a fired up engine. The deep part should always be glowing orange/red color. The outside coil should always be intact and should look greyish and not distorted.

Dont you think os8 plug is a little too hot for 30%?

Oh? Okay. I'll keep that in mind.

Also, what plug would you suggest for running 30%?

I noticed that when I started off using the stock glow plug that came with the GT2 RTR and ran 10%. I moved tp the OS#8 and ran 30% and it seems that a tank of fuel lasts at least 6-8 minutes longer (roughly 10-15 minutes on a tank), versus the 5-6 minutes on 10%.

oh i see i see

Usually running high nitro requires a cooler plug. You might be able to pull out a little more power and engine consistency with a colder plug

heres a short guide from os:

Ah, okay okay. Would you recommend the A5 plug then?

Ah, I guess I'm running slightly lean! Not too much that it'll be that bad for my engine. Richen it by 1-hour and give it a go tomorrow!

Aer-wubby:
where did you find that glow plug article? The photo and captions are not entirely accurate in the explination.
