I'm having problems breaking in my rtx27 from duratrax, i'm following the break in instructions but the motor keeps overheating (300+ degrees) and I have only ran 1 tank through it. I cut it off before it gets to hot let it cool and with in a few minutes its back at 300 again. The high speed needle is set at 4 1/2 turns out. Im using 20% odonnel fuel and a cold to medium plug. please help thanks

airleak. 4 1/2 turns out the motor shouldnt even start. just idleing? ive never heard of a motor hitting that high of a temp just sitting there.

thanks, but what is going on with that motor, it starts fine but heats up super fast. do I need to contact duratrax and get a new motor? This thing ate 3 glow plugs within 5 min of idleing. 4 1/2 turns is the breakin setting thn 1/12 turn for 5 tanks says duratrax.

Savagecommander says "airleak". Sure sounds like it. Especially if you are going through glowplugs.

Burning up glowplugs is usually from running too lean. Even though you ahve the needles set where they tell you, if air is leaking in, your air/fuel ratio may be too lean. Normal spot fopr a leak is around the carb where it installs into the crankcase. Carefully put some RTV (rtecommended is the oxygen sensor safe stuff) around the carb where it will meet the crankcase. Also dab some RTV both sides of the pinch bolt.

Engines can run quite hot until they are broken in, although generally it is a result of incorrect tuning. Turn counting is not much help other than getting it to run at factory specs. I'm not sure about your engine, but I've had engines that were runnning too lean at WOT and the HSN set around 4 turns. Typcially it's more like 2.5 though. You may want to try richening up the needles to see what happens.

Another problem may be your idle stop screw is set too high. Engine idles too high, clutch is grabbing...wheels won't turn as vehicle is held down for starting.....engine heats up. Easy check.....if you hold your vehicle off the floor with the engine running, do the wheels turn?

If its just idleing and hiting 300 hun forget about main needle your idle needle need to be wayyy richer....to late now its prob toast tho

First thing I would do is pull the engine, open it, clean it, seal it. Start with factory settings. When adjusting any needles you should turn in very small amounts, like the hours on the face of a clock. What do the glow plugs look like when you remove them?
