Default WHICH CARDEN 40% 330S or 37% YAK

I've gotten the go ahead to buy a 40%.Would like some input from people that have flown these and what power set-ups you are using.I have a Carden 35% Extra and a Comp-Arf 2.6 Yak now..I am not a proficient 3-D flyer.I love the Extras but I'm fairly keen on the Yak.Thoughts appreciated.

Default RE: WHICH CARDEN 40% 330S or 37% YAK

I talked to Dennis about this topic a few weeks ago. According to him the Yak and the Extra 260 were tweeked from what he has learned with the Extra 330 and the edge. Ive got a 40% 330 and its a great airplane and I was looking to build something else and it was between the 260 and the yak. According to Dennis both ariplanes will fly very similar. He was waiting for Mike McConville and Frank Knoll to swap the airframes so he could get a true comparison from the two of them. According to Dennis the Yak and the 260 will out 3D the 330, but the 330 is the king of Imac. He had thought that the yak and the 260 would fly the sequence as well as the 330, but the 3D capabilities of the 260 and the yak would be better. He pretty much said that between the yak and the 260 the only difference for me would be the looks of each aircraft. 3 weeks ago there was some room on the August run of the Yak, but it was selling out quick. Im not sure of the 260 production schedules.

As far as perfomance and set-up, I think you cant go wrong with any of the 3 airplanes. Any of the 150 sized engines will fly the crap out of it. Call dennis and pick his brain thats what he is there for. I would get a hold of him this week because I know he is going to Joe Nall. Any specific questions I can answer I would gladly help.

It would be nice if Mike, Frank, or Brian would chime in here since they probably have more time on these than anyone else . . .

Are their any flying other than the ones owned my Mike and Frank?

Go with the 260 or the 330. The yak doesn't even look like a yak. It's an ugly rendition of something that flys.

Man, it is one thing to say that you do not agree or like the way the plane looks but don't make comments like that.

OK, a quick chime in. All that I've flown are great airplanes. I havent flown the Yak yet. I believ Frank stil has some rudder linklage issues with it so it would be hard to get a good comparison yet.

I flew the 260 in its first IMAC contest last w/e. I also put a few flights on my 330 before the contest getting it ready for Brian Hueffmeier who flew it in the contest. Both are great IMAC airplane. IMHO, the 260 is best though. I'd consider it the king of IMAC. I prefer the way it snaps, rolls and the power of the rudder. VERY strong w/ insignificant coupling.
Although my 260 and 330 weigh within a few ounces of eachother (actuallt my 330 is a few ounces lighter) the 260 feels lighter in the air. I was even getting comments from observers that it looks like it was very light.

In 3D the 260 really takes off vs the 330. Its much more active. The stronger rudder really comes into play. With the larger ailerons like I have on my 260 (which I highly recommend) it has a lot more aileron authority in high alpha for harier rolls etc.

Obviously I'm a really big fan of the Carden 260. I believe someone got one in the air last w/e and I heard through Dennis that he also felt it was "the one".

Mike,

Ive got a 330 Im just about to cut the ailerons free. Its the last thing I have to do on the airplane before covering. Do you recommend increasing the length of the ailerons. I have them marked stock right now, but have not cut them yet. by the way its the 40%.

I would cut the ailerons longer on the 330. I believe my 330 does have then cut somewhat longer, thoug I dontrememer how much. There are pics of it on the Carden site so you might be able to tell fom some of them. Its the one from the DL mAsters and Tucson Shootout.

My 260 has larger ailerons than that. Not only longer but tapered. I believe the cord is 6-1/2 at thr oot end and 4-1/2 at the tip. I have 3 x 8611 on each, ut have disconnected the middle one and tried it w/ 2 and it was fine. The new 8611A should fine w/ 2 per for sure.

i flown the 330 and it is a nice machine. very little coupling. The Yak pictures don't do it justice. I really didn't like the looks of the plane, but when you see it in person the plane looks alot better. I really liked the lines of the plane.. i can't say anything about the 260 because I haven't seen one. imo

thanks Mike I think I will add another inch or two to get the root more in the line of thrust.

Jack...good luck you wont be sorry you built any of Carden's kits. lot of work but in the end you get a great flying airplane with unbelievable durability and reliability. Any questions I can answer feel free to Pm me. good Luck.

I thought that Dennis felt that longer ailerons would make snaps (or other maneuvers) worse as the ailerons would blank the stab? Has this been disproved.

Basically I thought the theory was the shorter ailerons where better for sequences and the longer better for 3D.

Mike let me fly it and its an awesome plane.
I could definately feel the difference in weight between his 260 and my 42 pound 330.

No Doubt you could "Feel the difference" between a 42 lb Carden and a 39 lb Carden, however that's not the 330 to the 260 that's the amount of glue used . . . my 330 is 38 lbs. My goal on my next carden is 37 lbs or less, and I have seen Carden Edge's at around 35lbs.

wgeffon Thanks for the Video of Mike flying the 260 through Unlimited. That was very telling of the performance of the plane. No doubt Mike could make anthing look good though. And By the way your 330 in the background looks hot. The 330 still has an awsome look to it.

Does anyone have a video of the Carden Yak?

Very true. Mine was built stock and has MTW Cans in it. 41-42 is pretty much what they weigh when built like that.
Mikes 330 and 260 were lightened in the build.

I only flew it for about half a tank so there is no way for me to make a comparison between it and the 330.
I really liked it though.

Thats not mine. A friend of mine owns that one.

I am flying this one. (Jason Noll's 330 from last year)

I just got home from flying my 330 this evening. All I can say is the 260 must be an amazing airplane if it is better than the 330.

I have flow the Carden Cap, Edge, and the Extra 330 and they all fly amazing. If the 260 combines the strengths of the Edge and Extra together it Will be amazing.
