Default OS or Epic .18 Engine in MT2?

I would like to put either the OS CVRX .18 or the Epic .18 engine in my MT2.
They both had good ratings in the Radio Car Magazine. It would be easier to install with a rotary carb style but I hear the slide performs better. I am not ready for the .21 conversion just yet... have to get used to an .18 first.
Any opinions or experience related to these two engines? I know that CEN will have a .18 out shortly but have not seen any tests on it.

digout,

Our NX 3.0 .18 engine (G70356) is now in stock. Look for ratings soon in magazines such as RCCA, Xtreme, RC CAR, and Driver. on the engine. Power looks to be very promising with this attractive engine.

Installing a slide carb is possible.. . however setting up the linkage can be difficlut with some engines.

On either engine, would a slide or rotary carb be better? I know the slide would be a little bit harder to install due to significant linkage changes for the CEN MT2.

My local hobby shop tech said that if you want a more responsive carb, use the slide one. The rotary is good for mid/top range while the slide is best for bottom end take-offs.

Dig out,

Yes... this is why most Slide carbs are designed for on-road use. For off-road, you can only use so much bottom end.. or else you will just "spin" the tires. Thus you will not be able to control the truck very well. Unless, you are driving your vehicle on-road most of the time, the rotary carb is recommended.

CenRacing have a point there. i have the slide carb on the os 18 in my rally and the bottom end is delivered very quickly and is hard not to give it too much gas, entertaining and impressive - but not the fastest or most gracious of setups!
i have got around this slightly by fiddling the linkage, but again this is tricky due to the car being laid out for a rotary carb.

basically - get the rotary mate.

I chose the OS 18 with the slide carb. They had them on ebay for $109. Ran it today and the RC magazines were right on! The OS 18 pushed it from around the stock set-up 40 mph to about 55 mph on the street. I am using the 14/17 pinion gears and the small diameter Proline Speed Hog II tires. I believe this is the limit on the outdrives and strength of the chassis. Looks like I will have to try the 10mm aluminum tube trick on the outdrives if the OS keeps producing this kind of power.

Kysi,

We have changed the shape on the diff cups slightly to make them stronger.

I plan to replace the piston and sleve on my NT-16 engine (rotary carb) with piston and sleve from NX-3.0. Will it work? What other part do I need to buy.
Thank you

Tridi,

Yes that will work, but you will need the new head as well, as they have different button sizes.

Thank you for your quick response.

What is the part number of the Piston, Sleve and Head of the NX-3.0. What is the retail price for those part and please let me have your suggestion for the best tune pipe for that modification (p/n please).

Best regards
TriDI

Tridi,

The part # for the .18 NX3.0 piston and sleeve is G70344-08 This is an ABC piston and sleeve. The head is G70356-02. If you are going to do this conversion it is recommended to also change the Connecting rod, as it is "beefier" in the .18 engine. G70356-07.

We definately recommend our tuned pipe for this application. The part # is G70352, G70352B (BLACK) and G70352C (COPPER) These pipes are similar to the Nova Rossi line of tuned pipes.

the diff cups can also be fixed this way;

First of all this can’t fix diff cups, only prevent them from ever breaking again so you need to start with 4 good diff cups.

Buy a piece of 7/16 diameter brass tubing

cut off 4 pieces that are 1/4 inches long.

Get some aluminum foil, tin foil or some thing that is similar to that.

Cut 4 strips that are 1/4 inch wide and about 6 inches long.

Wrap one strip around a diff cup and take one of the pieces of brass tubing and try to fit it on.

It probably won’t fit so remove one turn of the foil and try again.

Repeat this until the brass piece fits over the foil.

in-case you are wondering, you need the foil because the diff cup is a little smaller than the brass tubing on the inside and the foil takes up that little bit of space.

After the brass piece fits over the diff cup and foil and is not loose, put a couple drops of thin CA glue (tire glue, super glue) on it and let it sit for about 5 minutes while the glue dries completely.

Repeat for the other three diff cups.

The last thing that you need to do is file down the little part of the shock tower that is near the diff cup. This is necessary because the now slightly larger diff cup needs a little more room.

10mm olives from the plumbing section of ur local hardware shop will also work - they look a little nicer than cut pieces of tube, which is a bit of a bonus.

I have to vouch for the diff cup mod. Since mod'ing my cups, I have yet to break one.

Just some extra info on other engines I have tried include theTraxxas 2.5 (good top speed), Team Orion .18 Wasp ( average power) and Duratrax .18 (good bottom and mid-range). Next I will be trying the new Ofna Hyper .12 and Megatech Q1.6. Quick update: Tower has the OS .18 for $92.00!! If you want more run time the Ofna Dominator fuel tank (125cc) will fit with minimum changes. Also if you want to lighten the truck up a bit, the Ofna Pirate 10 truck fuel tank (100cc) and battery/receiver box have plenty of room to fit. The pirate 10 wheels/tires are also a good tire alternate. If someone could post instructions on how to post pictures, I would show what some of the set-ups look like.

If you want to get more run time, try to use less % nitro. I try to use 10% nitro on my ATX, with the standard 75 cc fuel tank it run for 9 minutes 58 second compare to 6 minutes 12 seconds using 16% nitro. Using OS#8 plug, HSN 1 7/8 turn ccw, LSN 1 turn ccw from fully closed, the engine temperature is 232 - 246 F in average. So far, I could not see any difference in performance. Next Sunday, I will race using 10% nitro to see whether I can beat other car which use 16 - 20% nitro. I believe with 20 minutes in Main I can safe about 16 seconds by less refuelling.

OS 18. I dont recall a CEN engine being any better than a OS or epic. Or any CEN engine being "great".
