i had the same problem.... but in my case it was the clutchbell and pinion gears... they are ment to be locked together. turn the clutchbell with your finger and see if the pinion gears turn with it.... if it doesnt then u need a new clutchbell and pinion gears set... another thing is the clutch inside the clutchbell..... one of the springs may have fallen off or somethin. also check that when u turn the flywheel it turns the piston.... hope that helps but from what u have said it sounds like u have already checked

i had a prob with the pin in the 2nd gear cluthc coming loose and jamming in one of the holes in the vented brake disc - that confused me for a bit and locked my funfactor up solid. its not that pin catching on urs is it?
does the truck freewheel ok? or is it locked up when u lose drive?

poor judgement... same thought i have... check and make sure your dog bones are not getting caught up in the diff cups... when they start to wear, the end of the dog bones bind in the diff cups... can be adjusted with the pillow balls and adding a o-ring to each diff cup.. mine used to do this and locked up the truck.. when I would pick up the truck, the bones would fall back into place.. I finally figured it out after bending or breaking many dogbones...

It is possible that your gear mesh is to tight and when every thing heats up it puts a bind on things and returns to almost normal after it cools.
This would also explain the wear on the gears.

provided the engine is still revving up ok and not just stuck idling, best advice i can give is to strip the entire drivetrain down, clean it all up, and see if anything materialises while u are at it. check that ALL the bearings are ok in the diffs, and clutch etc, and as u reassemble as per factory instructions, make sure none of the parts are binding, or that anything feels stiff.
it sounds from ur description like something is getting hot and binding, then it cools and frees off, like rolland mentioned above.
check that 2nd gear clutch pin i mentioned too.
let us know how u get on mate, whatever u do, good luck

check as poor judgement said everything because at this point, you have a problem that is not easy to find... I would suggest you make sure when you put the clutch back together you make sure it is on the right way.. I had mine on backwards once and the engine revved very high before it would move.. then it finally stopped... Good luck and keep us posted..

Scuff up the inside of the clutch bell with a scotch bright pad. The inside of the clutch bell could be glazed and when the clutch gets hot the shoes no longer grab. You might also need to replace the shoes.
