Default 2wd beach buggy

Well I have decided to put together another truck from all the spares I have lying around and have opted for a 2wd truck designed specifically for running on the beach. I am going for single speed and was wondering if there were any other single speed runners who could tell me what clutch bell they are using (I was thinking 15t) and what spur gear size. Also is there any other brand spur gear that will fit (AE, Losi, Mugen etc). One last thing, cant sem to find the part numbers for the 2wd stub axles! Any help much appreciated. Pics when things progress.

Mate, I am running a 13/47 combo with 100mm tyres with the .12. While top speed is 40+ mph its a little slow on the take-off. With a bigger engine it would pull it easily. An 11 would suit mine better. Oh and I am just running the front end 4WD style but without the diff and dogbones, mine started out an MT2.

Cmon man, check your favourites... tut

Are you going for the the "proper" 2wd setup or a simple removal of 4wd bits and 1waybearinged (4 beers down, 7pm, cant be arsed) spur?

oh - and what tyres are u planning on using?

No no, no half measures here. I am going for the full enchilada! I have the 2wd bulkhead and most of the 2wd bits sorted off ebay. Its the fiddly little bits and the single speed stuff that is holding me up. I was wondering if the AE 2wd stuff fitted because the LHS stocks tons of stuff for the buggies and stadium trucks. It would be well handy if the RC10GT spurs and slipper fitted.
For tyres I have a set of ribbed fronts but I am going to pick a set of pinned tyres rather than the paddles. The reason for this is so it handles ok on grass aswell. Not sure what pins to get yet but I have a fondness for lugnuts. Should give a nice rooster tail of sand!
I am also fitting bushes rather than bearings in the wheels for obvious reasons and I am trying to knock up some 'mudguards' for the inside of the body to keep the sand away from the delicates!

I would suggest taking you single speed hub into the LHS and seeing what will, or what could be made to work.
Don't limit yourself to only RC10 parts it is amazing how many different parts from different manufactureres can be made to work.

Yeah, I am heading up there today so I will have a little nosey round and ask some questions. I was hoping the Savage spurs would work but they wont, also thinking about the metal centre diff spur from a GS buggy but that wasn't going on either. I need another full set of wide arms and the servo mounts today, I will post up what the LHS thought about other trucks parts.

I'll post some up later on today. I am waiting for all my ebay wins to turn up, then I can really get going on it. At the moment it is just a little collection of purple aluminum with a battery box!!

The parts should be here any day now. I have got one of the GS 13t clutch bells to try aswell, I think it should help on the sand to give better acceleration. I am enjoying working on the CEN again. it has been a while I have to admit. They are so easy to work on it is amazing. I could probably put one of these things together with my eyes closed now, I am sure everyone here is the same. Its just that working on the GS is all well and good for racing but the FF is pure fun. I have kind of missed it TBH.
This little beach buggy should be a laugh but it will be tough aswell. I have got the hardened diff gears and the machined diff hub for the rear, aswell as the New Era roll cage, so it should be well up for a bit of abuse. I am undecided as to whether or not to use the rear battery box and try the receiver positioned elsewhere, or stick with the factory solution and use the side mounted box. I really want to use a 125cc fuel tank, which fits perfectly where the side box would go but i am not sure about balance.
Anyway I am just waffling now. i will post some pics up as soon as there is something to look at.

You could go for Azzmans "Big Tank Mod in Stock Position" type thing... just a thought.

thats what I'm using wtih the .28 in there, and it JUST fits. kinda throws the balance off though, you definately need to kep the batts on the right side if you have the engine and tank on the left.

I did a sort of pre-assembly last night with the parts I already have and decided to put the 125cc tank in the JT and stick with stock for the beach runner. It is real easy to do with the JT, I have had one fitted in there before. The CEN top plate requires cutting for a 125 or bigger so I will stick with 75cc in that one. It also means the car wont go as far in the event of a runaway!!

Have you thought about using paddle tyres on the beach?

Im thinking of getting some to try out instead of the brickpins. Good for the soft stuff for sure, but Im not sure what theyd think of the firmer stuff.

Thinking about it... 2wd... how about maxx wheels on the back and 2.2s on the front?

I have got dirtworks which are pretty grippy on damp sand. I did look at the paddle tyres but I want the truck to handle grass aswell. I have ordered some lugnuts and some ribbed fronts. I have also got skinny ribbed fronts and some spiked tyres sitting around. They are all 2.2" so I will leave the wheels until the 2.2s run out, then look at going Maxx size.
Tell you what though, these ebay sellers are getting slower and slower with their postage. Most of my bids ended over a week ago and still haven't got here. Not impressed at all!!
I am still trying to find a 'plain' VW Beetle body, the HPI one was kind of fussy at the back so didn't really fit the bill. if anyone knows of any others around, let me know.

Sorry, I missed your post there Azzman. Thanks for the offer mate but I am going to leave the top plate intact. I have several butchered remains of top plates here, I could probably use one of them but i reckon the 75 will be fine. (for now). Thanks anyway.

Had a bit of a change of strategy. Going to use the JT for the 2wd now and revert the 4wd to the CEN chassis. The reasons for this are that the JT has a nice 'open plan' layout which will make it easier to get the loose sand off the truck after use. Secondly, it will make the fitting of a 125cc tank no problem at all and thirdly, if I decide to race the CEN at NNRC track, the New Era roll cage will come in handy on the jumps that they are building!! I will post some pictures up as soon as the stuff from the States arrives (two weeks and counting []). Got my wheels and front stub axles today, just waiting for tyres and all the single speed stuff aswell as the hardened steel diff gears. Sorry no pics yet!

Where are your parts coming from mate? Hope you got some good prices.

Ive not looked into the proper 2wd transmission setup to be honest, I just used the one way and prayed...

Any chance of using a steel cen spur with the slipper, and swapping out the one way bearing?

The 2wd front bulkhead and all of the single speed stuff is coming from Atomic Hobby and Game. I was going to buy a set of CEN hubs and some dogbones off them aswell but I am thinking twice now as they don't seem to be the fastest shippers in the World!! In a strange turn of events, the stuff I ordered from the LHS turned up within days!! Never thought I would be saying that. Maybe Ripmax/Irvine have got their act together a bit?
I guess it may be possible to use a steel spur but until I have the stuff infront of me I will only be guessing. I will definitely be trying to make this thing as tough as possible and having a look at all sorts of ways of doing that. Sooner these parts turn up, the sooner I can get cracking. I can see a neutral feedback looming on the ebay horizon!
