Default GST Roll Cage

After seeing a photo that TRD posted of a broken engine(i am not planning on doind 20ft drops), i started looking for a roll cage. Locally there is nothing available, i found one from vgracing for $65 +$30 shipping. I need to know from you guys if you think it is worth $100 or should i try and make something myself.

Default RE: GST Roll Cage

I purchased a VG cage for my Genesis about a year ago. It is definitely heavy duty, but it is also heavy weight. It has suffered through numerous 4+ feet upside-down on concrete crashes with no deformation. But on a recent outing I managed to do an endo at full throttle, which bent the cage into more of a parallelogram shape. Because of the way it mounts to the front and back bulkheads, it put a lot of pressure on the mounting screws, which eventually bent and stripped out and cracked the plastic upper frame braces. I replaced the braces and bent the cage back into shape, but the next time I flipped the truck on a jump, even though it was minor, the cage bent again. My conclusion is that it is a great cage that will protect the truck through numerous crashes, but once it is bent, it will cause other things to break too. If it had a way of attaching to the metal frame along the midsection of the truck, it would be perfect. I think the RC Solutions cage would work better, but it looks like you would have to take it off just to get access to anything:

I got one but I don't think its really needed since when the truck flips the handle & body mounts usually are good enough to protect it.

Yeah I flipped my GST over on asphalt and the handle took all the impact and there was barely any scuff marks, and I've tumbled it a few times over some jumps and the body mounts take a good beating.

I have been thinking for a while, and even asked Cen about it, but all you/I really need is a second roll bar to protect the engine.

I have looked into buying a second roll bar, but the fuel tank gets in the way of mounting it. []
I was also thinking of adding some bars from the stock roll bar that run rearwards over the engine and attach to either the rear bumper or shock towers. But with out any access to s decent work shop, and crappy basic tools at home, I am unable to make such a thing. [][]

I bought this for my LE a year oh so so ago and it works just fine for the money. The top has gotten scratched and dented but protects the truck and motor with no problem.
It even survived a trip underneath my work van when I let a buddy of mine drive it and he put it in reverse and floored it, the 'genny got stuck so bad that we had to jack my van up to get it out but other than the body tore to shreds the rest of the truck was fine. I credit the New era roll cage for that!

Hello,

I just posted a picture of my new 7.7 in the gallery. I have a chrome rollcage I found on ebay. A guy named vinylgrafix sells them for alot of diffrent trucks. It's really sturdy, not to heavy and worth every bit of the 60-70 bucks i spent encluding shipping.

hmmm, a roll cage is a good diea for such a heavy truck. I have broken one handle and bent one completely out of shape.
The New era one looks sick! but $130???

Time to find some stainless rod and pull out the mig maybe...[sm=devious.gif]

Thank you for your replies and views, much appreciated. Since I was unable to bash the weekend I took some time to study the chassis and components, busy with some sketches for a roll bar. Picking up some SS rods this week to try and make a roll bar for the truck. I will let you know how it works out and post pictures. If that does not work out I'll go shopping. Thanx again

Dustin are you talking about the one I posted?
It's only 50 bucks and very solid.
I tried to check the link but New era seems down right now.
I think they do have a more expensive one but the 50 dollar one works just fine.

hehe, Im a bit of an idiot yeah...
I meant the RC solutons one.

The new era one would do the job as well, but no protection for the shock towers, and not as "blingy"
I actually built one similar to the new era one for my MT2, and it works just fine.
