RE: Deception 40 Scratch Build
David,
The basic box is finished and ready for the razor plane. I'm not doing any building today as I have the stomach flu.
I emailed Scott with a request for the cores.
I'll post a pic later.

RE: Deception 40 Scratch Build
Here is the box, ready to start shaving with the razor plane. All wood grain that must be carved runs fore and aft. The only glue used on the pieces to be carved is weldbond (white glue). These two rules make the job go much easier.
I love this part, I feel like a sculptor.
It's easy, just remove everything that does not look like a Deception.
Well here we go with sever issues again!!! I'll post the photobucket link:

Thanks Bryan!
At this point I can move to shaping and installing the vertical stabilizer. I can't make much more progress on the fuselage without the wing.

RE: Deception 40 Scratch Build
For the public record, yes, I'm taking a set - but Scott already knows that.
May there be more Deceptions of all sizes!
BTW, Scott has hinted at the possibility of making glass canopies for the D40. If so, that should make the model more apppealing to those who might be considering a piped RE 45 under the hood - late Kimbro style!
Ed (NM2K), come on, you ought to jump on this opportunity! I seem to recall you mentioning that you very much enjoyed flying 40 size models at some point in the past. I understand that you also played a role in the airfoil design of the Deception - care to tell us more about that? I'd be most interested - very funky yet cool airfoil. Max thickness is way back! I'd have to draw a line down the wing planform to see if max thickness varies in distance from the LE - Side Pocket style. Haven't looked into that.
David.

Here is the balsa canopy ready to become a "plug". I'll ship this to Scott (PatternPilot) tomorrow to be made into a mold for fiberglass canopies.

Rafa,
perhaps but then there would be no option of pipe under the hood. Also, this is an all painted canopy so transparency is not of much interest (well, maybe it's just me).
Just sent you a PM.
David.

RE: Deception 40 Scratch Build
Great! Looking forward to your good work. Yes, I would have sealed it, coated it with glass and polycryllic, then used filler primer until it was smooth and then sprayed it with lustercoat. I also would have hollowed it out.
I like having a source for fiberglass canopies much better!
Can't wait to get my hands on those wing cores so I can get back to the build!

RE: Deception 40 Scratch Build
I have decided to finally follow David (Doxilia)'s good advice and embed a piece of 1/32 inch plywood in the trailing edges. I'll use my Unimat to cut a slot at the trailing edge of the rudder:
The rudder will then be carved down to the tapered shape. The 1/32 inch plywood piece will serve as a centering guide, and it will make the trailing edge tougher.
aaaarrrrrrrggggggggg!!!!!!!!!! connection was reset
I'm about to move this thread to that other classic pattern site.
