Cool Brian, mounting the engine 90deg on it's side just like my Curare too, although the shots from the back and left hand side don't show this clearly.

Brian,

Nice US60. I really like the anhedral in the tail. Even though the US has a Kaos wing, you still may be frowned upon if youtry to take it to a pattern meet.....

I believe the question was, "Does the Ultra Sport qualify as a classic pattern ship now?" The answer is "No". And it never will. Why? Because it was never a patternship in the first place, but instead was and is a low wing equipped sport plane.

Sorry, but you gotta draw the line somewhere. Now it shares some similarities with a few classic pattern designs and it IS a great flyer. So why worry about a few words? Of course, if you spent a thousand dollars on an elite brushless electric motor and several hundred dollars per battery pack, the SPA might let you fly it...

Looks great Brian! I really like the anhedral and I especially like the wheel pants! They go very well with that design!

I really appreciate your insight, commentary and character that you bring to the site here; I just have one thing, and that is will you bring back the frog avatar? I really liked him. I also wish you were a member of my club, you have so much wisdom from your years of doing battle in the pattern circuit.

Did Tower change the actual dimensions of the Kaos, or just the structure? I don't necessarily have a problem with structural modifications. Construction practices change.

The US was designed way before Tower started making their Kaos. Also, designer Jim Feldman used the same wing and basic fuselage layout as the original Bridi Kaos, enlarged it slightly (I believe about 10%) enlarged the tail area as well as obvious fuselage shape changes...The US was born. It had nothing to do with the Tower Kaos

Hey Brian,

nice US!

Yea, I was going to comment the same as Johnny above. When GP started in the early 80's (perhaps the company itself started in the late 70's but I don't believe they sold product), they kitted at least two if not three Kaos'. A 40 and a 60 and perhaps also a 20 - not sure about this last. I believe that the GP 1982 flyer already contained pics of the US 40 and 60 and as is well known, the design evolved from the Kaos. So GP basically sold "flat top" Kaos's and "turtle deck" kaos's. I believe both had sheet balsa tails.

Many a sport design looks very similar to the US including the more recent Direct Connection Tsunami which has a slightly more "vintage" look with a shorter deck and a large canopy atop the wing. The nose of the Tsunami is longer than that of the US and the model was designed around conventional gear like you installed in your model, except the gear in on the wing rather than the fuse.

Now that you are building a SK60 and have also built an US60, you will have an interesting pair of models to compare in terms of flight characteristics. I'll be bold and venture that the US might actually be a better flying plane... [X(] although gear (retracts on the SK) might make a difference.

I'll have to see if I can locate those 1982 flyers to see what GP was advertising at the time. I know they sold Sticks, CAP 21's (three sizes) - designed by Mr. GP himself, Kaos's, US's, Trainers (based on the RCM plans I think like the one you built with your daughter) - three sizes and a selection of 6 glass/foam models including the Tipo and the Illusion.

Mmmm... in that case the flyer I'm thinking of didn't contain any US's. There was a flyer that advertised a bunch of US's and Super Sportsters but evidently it came later in the decade.

I'm pretty sure the Kaos's were in the '82 flyer though as were the CAP's.

I have one of the RCM Trainer 20's. My Dad built one when I was a kid while he was recuperating from an industrial accident. It was baby blue with gold wings, and only made a few flights. It had an OS .20 FP.

A few years ago I built another one (per the plans - what a brick!) with my "adopted grandfather" Ellis Grumer, and we gave it to Dad for his birthday present. It's powered by a E-Flite Power 25 on 3S, and is fast due to the weight, but flies nicely. I should build a light one sometime.

This was taken in August 2007.

Definitely not a classic pattern plane.  And though it was not a competitive pattern, it is a good novice plane.  In fact 60 and 120 size scale aerobatic planes have been used successfully in novice pattern and even trainers have been used.  Even the SPA will allow you to use it for novice but your points will not count.
