Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird

Jett is probably the best. If that is too much then the next best is probably the Fox .60. You can get it for half off if you trade in an old clunker; even an old broken, unrepairable 1/2 A engine. Be sure to get the new twin needle carb, said to be the best yet.

Be sure to click on the image of the carb below.

Note that both manufactures are still around, and both give excellent service for parts and repair.

An option that is not usually discsussed is MECOA (Model Engine Company of America) at www.mecoa.com. They sell the RJL (formery Kraft) 61
and the HP and HB line of engines. The HP 61 Gold Cup is a beautiful engine. All three are early 70s designs, now made in the USA. Prices are around $190 with muffler, but trade-ins are taken on some models. I had a Kraft 61 on a Super Kaos back in the 70s and it worked well - would have worked even better if I had a lighter touch with the spray gun!

like said a few times above a webra with dynamix is a very nice engine and very good quality (have one on my curare and a putting a .40 on my minare). Or a MVVS .60 you can choose yourself to make it SE or RE and it's not very expenssive and a solid engine have one on my deception and has unlimited vertical MUCH better than the OS 61 fx i had on it before was maybe one of the worst engines i ever had.

If I were buying new it would be the TT Pro 61. The "Auctionhouse" OS 61 SF is also a great way to go if new or near new, but that is the newest OS I would buy over the TTPro.

What about an OS AX55, AX65 or AX75 super power and OS quality.

Good engines, way more expensive than the Magnum of the same or more power. John said he was on a budget.

Hi John,
Good choice on the Magnum, I had to laugh when guys were suggesting the 400 dollar Jett for you budget project!!!
OS 55 AX Light, easy to run with good power, it'll turn an 11x7 prop with ease with the included muffler; 170 bucks.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXNMD1
Magnum 61, slightly larger and heavier than the OS 55 AX (made on .46 case), this is easy to run and makes more power with included muffler and an 11x7 than the 55. Cheaper, almost as east to set up; 120 bucks.
http://www.hobbypeople.net/index.php...ngine-rnv.html
These two engines I have experience with and own and run in two of my models. I wouldn't waste any time or money on aftermarket mufflers because the manufacture's mufflers are tuned already, they both haul. You may be able to find them cheaper at some other online outlets or at a local hobby shop, swap meet, etc, but a new one with your Tower discount will make it easy. Both of them run well on about any fuel, like Omega. Gary can get you pointed the right direction and may have done so already, but these are my recommendations.

Posted this once before, and since the OP has already found an engine, I'm beating a dead horse here.
Shopping for a new .60 size engine?

Webra; but no longer made, hard to get parts.
Rossi; almost as expensive as the Jett and hard to get parts for.
HP; good engine I own one, you can get parts - well sometimes, just depends if Mecoa decides to make a run of parts or not.
RJL aka Kraft, same issue as HP.
K&B, Twister same issue as the HP.
OS;they do not make a.60 the larger engines may be illegal, certainly for SPA and the .55 is not competitive.
EVO, I suspect it is only marginally better than the Magnum.

I have to say something on this: I am a ST guy, have always loved them and always will but with deference to the other great engines out there. I do have a beef and it is this; I like the round head ST's but the aesthetics of the square head (later)runs just makes the engine look like a truck engine and I think it takes away from the sleek lines of the plane. A Rossi, OPS, Magnum, you name it, these are all great runners since he is going to run an 11/7.5 or thereabouts prop which all of the stuff you guys have mentioned will turn over very well. So will the ST. It's just that it looks like a slug on the front of the ship sticking out there and all. Sure it runs well but it just takes away from the classic look of, in this, case the Dirty Birdy. I know, I'm probably a little over the top on this it just bugs me that's all so ther you have it. Thanx for letting me gripe.

I like the Tigre's too. I bought a 20 dollar used 51 off of eBay and it runs like a top. Have used them for decades in Stunt. They just take a touch more adjustment of the carbs than an OS. I love to hear the Chinese vs Italian debate. My buddy blueprints ST's and says the manufacturing equipment was more accurately installed in China as the pistons and liners are now round instead of egg shaped!
My dad runs a couple of ST 61's and they are some of his favorites.

I also gave him the Fox which is the next best engine mentioned in this thread. Besides a used Jett is a bargain compaired to a new OS.
He is going to need a tuned pipe for this plane for the speed he needs. I doubt the Magnums will last more than a year with a pipe. The best engines I have seen mentionedother than a Fox or used Jett are:
Webra; but no longer made, hard to get parts.
Rossi; almost as expensive as the Jett and hard to get parts for.
HP; good engine I own one, you can get parts - well sometimes, just depends if Mecoa decides to make a run of parts or not.

The longevity issues of the EVO and Magnum are problems encountered in your own experience? What components failed? Curious as I want to run mine on a pipe.

Ya I know a cheap budget sucks, but I figured that if the engine is good for at least a year, and I'm really hooked on this type of flying, then I can always upgrade when more funds are available. My goal was to get the plane together and in the air, sitting on my work bench seems soo sad to not have it flying.

I've been selling my Rossi's off one by one.
I have a ''NIB'' 61 RE FIRE with a pipe and custom made flexible header.
As was said, they don't make anything better.
Interested?

Good used Rossi .61 engines come up on ebay all the time. In the past year Ihave gotten 2 of them less then 100.00 each. One had a bit of time on it but was a great runner, the other was a 5 port engine that had never been run. It had some powder in it that I never figured out wat it was but after some cleaning, a tear down and re assembly it runs better then any glow engine I have owned.

Magnum facts:
Magnum #1- 6 hours, 30 minutes of hard running. 39 flights. How does it go? Ask these guys- check posts 73, 83 & 89.

Also this: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1448239
Magnum #2, this one running a pipe- 3 hours, 52 minutes total time, 29 flights.

The harder that you run these things the better they run.
As far as connecting rod longevity goes, my first one was shimmed too tight (too high of a compression ratio). I was blowing plugs, and loosened up the rod from detonation. Fortunately, I know what I am doing, and was able to identify the problem and fix it. the Chinese push the CR to get max power. Sometimes a bit too tight. Best of all, Global replaced the rod gratis. Great customer service for a 100$ engine. Don't let it detonate and it will give you good service. I've had higher dollar engines do worse.
Replacing the bearings is a great idea. that applies to the high dollar OS engines as well. They put sub par bearings in some of their engines from time to time. Yes the Magnum engines have had a few quirks, but bang for the buck, they are a great value.
Put one in the front of your favorite Ballistic Pattern plane and be prepared from folks to ask "What the heck do you have in the nose of that thing?"Then get used to the slack jawed looks when you tell them its a $100 engine!

The best engines ever produced, I have 4 - 61SF's and 4-46SF's , not cheap and very difficult to find. All in nib condition. bought a collector's collection after he gave up the hobby.
