I know it's a little small, and probably not competitive as a result, but is there any other reason that no-one builds Phil Kraft's BarFli? I am considering doing one with an Enya 60. (Recently I flew a friend's KwikFli III with a Bluehead 60 and it was so enjoyable, I got to thinking about a Classic pattern model.)

I think the only reason it's not more popular, is that it was/is overshadowed by the Kwik Fli. Gotta remember, back then models that had a track record of major contest wins were very much in demand. As far as I know, Phil Kraft never really campaigned the BarFli to any extent.

The model was, though, quite popular with the Brits, a glance through the RCM&E of the time shows that were quite a few made. The mag carried the plan...

And at least it was Phil Kraft's alternate model for the WC. The RCM&E as well as the MAN article are in the [link=http://www.trentonrcflyers.com/pattern/articles-plans-instructions.htm]Classic Pattern Image Base[/link]. The RCM&E cover shows the model with the FAI sticker on wing and fuse. Phil Kraft describes in the articles why it was chosen as secondary model and KF III was the primary, but actually it was a tie.

In spite of the deep fuselage, it was a very good windy weather model - one reason for it's popularity in the UK. Likewise the Spreng Twister.

It appeals to me for its windy weather performance, as well as not often, (ever??!!) being done, at least in recent years. In one of the articles, Phil talked about extending the wings, (3" was good, 6" was not), as well as putting a conventional canopy on it with no detrimental effects. At a reported 5 - 5.5lb, it should go very well even with an old loop scavenged 60.

I have asked a few times on here, about this plane, or a design by Kraft, close to it. I am positive there was another one after this BarFli, it had a tapered wing, the nose was cleaned up, more taper at the front. Is anyone aware of this design ?
Any info appreciated.

Slik-fli. There is a thread on it here somewhere...I will try to find the RCM&E it is in and post something, provided RFJ don't get there first...

How about some plans (unfortunately, not full size) and an article on the Bar-Fli? Let me know if you have any trouble accessing these docs.

Thanks for the artcle post - I am using the plan page blown up to size as my plan.
Also try
http://time.fh-augsburg.de/~erd/Mode...ad/KwikFli.pdf
Go to page 31 "Alternative" for more Bar-Fli insights from a flight sim perspective.

Vince-
I built one in 2005, as did Beppe Fascione. Beppe and I are good friends, yet independently built this model by coincidence at nearly the same time.
It flys well, but not any better than a good sport plane of today's standards IMHO.
I had aileron flutter with it and resorted to dual servos and counterbalancing. It was a fun plane with an Enya 60III and Gold Metal radio.
One day I decided to use it to run-in a YS60. Big mistake. After climbing at a sixty degree angle to 400', I leveled it off and both ailerons separated from the wing.
Be careful of the RCME plans as there is a spacing error in the wing ribs. I also had to deviate slightly in the turdledeck as the bulkheads were not quite right. Use good modeling sense and enjoy the build!

Guys,
this is my Bar-Fli, that has been flown many times at the VR/Cs reunions. It has an ENYA 60 III for powerplant, turning an 11x7 3/4 around 11.500rpm with 15% Nitro and 23% oil. I use my Kraft Signature radio with KPS-23 servos. Unlimited vertical!
Ciao

I've seen these photos in my web searches - nice to have a name to go with them!
It's also nice to see an antique model done with an older engine, radio and even rubber bands!

Evan, that's it. Thanks very much. If you need anything sourced or shipped from the USA, let me know. www.lasercutUSA.com. is close to me. Have you seen this kitted anywhere?

I was stationed at Fort Hood in 1970 and flew with Dave Brown quite a bit. He was just starting his pattern career and was doing quite well. He was flying a red and white Bar Fli at the time.
