Default EU-1A

Saw this plane over in a thread in Jets and fell in love. Is there a reliable place that is still making these??

Thanks,
Dan

Hey Split S,

If you have not done so already, send a PM to Don "frequent flyer". I think he is making them along with some AWESOME classics.

Good luck with your search

Thanks for the responses. I e-mailed Carolina and pm'd Don. Hope I can find one. Didn't see the EU-1A on the RC City site, am I missing something?

No, R/C City is another option for other classics.

I purchased a Tipo 750 from Don-excellant work. I highly recommend his kits.

I received an EU-1A fuselage from Don. Took about a week to get to me. Probably one of his first. Just love that plane!!

Don at RCAiir used my wing to draw full sized plans for the EU-1A. I have his UFO and Atlanta kits, super glass work and the foam cutting is top notch.

Buddy from the club dropped off an "extra" EU-1A he had for me. Has three if I'm not mistaken, guess he could part with one. Needs some work but I can see it all finished and ready to go in my minds eye. Thanks Sam!!!

Paul, that's a good question regarding power plants. What's out there in rear exhaust anymore?

Jeff, don't know yet. Probably a take on the Blue Angels, just love them. Maybe switch the blue up to some pearl or something similar. Have a lot to do for others so this one will be on the back burner for a while I suppose...

YS has a good rear exhaust .61. I think Dub Jett has one too.

YS has no current 61 production - side or rear. The latter is supposed to change soon...

Jett does have a RE 90 as well as a 100 or 120 I believe. Better suited to the EU.

Novarossi and MVVS are the only current production RE 61's that I'm aware of. Although not current production, it is also possible to obtain new OPS gold head RE engines - 1980's production stock.

Blue pearl BA would be a sexy paint job. I have seen several EU1As done in BA colors and they all look great.

I started working on the plane today, fitting it in between paint work I have going on for others. If anyone is interested I'll convert this thread into a kind of restoration / paint thread. Could use some help from other EU-1A owners out there as I go to keep me straight and true. OK?

I enjoy you paint threads....I keep notes on your work. Now that you are painting a classic pattern bird, i will study in detail!
It is much easier to paint these things that it is giant jets

Great then guys, I'll start snapping pictures and updating this as time allows. In the meantime here a few pics of some recent paintwork of mine. First is a JMP Firebird followed by a Reaction 54.

Ok, let's get started here. Just finished a bit of paint work on a King Kat, got that out of the workshop and brought the wing back in.

All in all, the wing isn't in that bad of shape, actually pretty good but does need a bit of work. First off since this is being painted it needs to be glassed. That is tough to do with the ailerons attached. Both ailerons were given some gentle tugs at the existing hinge points revealing a few of them that were a bit soft. The ailerons were cut free from the wing. I removed the remaining hinge portions, a few of them slid right out of the wing and ailerons, so it is worth while for certain. The slots were then filled in and sanded smooth on the wing. The cap strip on the ailerons was sanded to half its' original thickness, re-capped with new balsa and then drilled for Robart hinge points, six in each aileron. The ailerons were then sanded and prepped for glass.

The torque rods were also showing some signs of age and were removed. This wing will have servos for each aileron so the torque rods are of course not needed. The center servo opening was filled in with foam and will be capped with a sheet of balsa.

The top side has its' share of dings and dents and the sheeting needs to be sanded to eliminate some small ridges where the balsa is butted together. The key to a successful paint job is to eliminate all potential problem areas now, before it is glassed. If it's ready for glass, paint shouldn't be too far behind. I'll use some balsarite to take care of the small dents, nice and light and sands very well. After I'm happy with the top I'll flip it over and get to work on the bottom.
