Hello All,
I was wondering those who have gotten the Curare 60 ARF if you would give a long term report on the plane. How is it holding up, what engine did you use etc.

Thanks,

My Curare won me a retro-contest last year with the OS 55 AX and pipe. The model is as solid as they come and flies beautifully. I had a very bad dead-stick landing into tall grass at high speed which broke the nose gear and pipe header. I only discovered five flights later the firewall was loose also. It actually stays in place even without glue so I just CA'd it. The only issues I have so far is that when you break an electric undercarriage unit like I did (motor and gear was stripped) you can't buy a new nose gear unit, you need a set of three.

No, it is setup for retracts. I haven't flown mine yet. It is definitely a quality kit. A friend of mine is flying one with the glow setup. He flew it all this last flying season without a problem. I'm going electric with mine. What is great about this ARF is that you can easily convert it to glow if you don't like the electric setup. It comes with all the necessary hardware for electric or glow. I flew my friends plane for a few minutes. It wasn't exactly setup to my preferences, but it was enough to sell me on it. It cost me around $800 (shipping $150) which included the plane, electric retracts, and two electric motors. I accidently ordered two motors. I know there are probably a few places you could get electric retracts in the US from. Shulman Aviation has them. I just didn't spend the time to see if they fit.

Pictures of my Curare. Can't wait for spring. Tired of the snow. All up weight with two 3S TP5400's in series is 7lbs - 5 ozs. At the recommendation of another Electric Curare owner, I purchased and installed some Bob Violett NACA Ducts. As you can see, it is cramped. I forgot how small these planes were compared to the cavernous 2M planes we fly today. Prop on the plane is a 13X8 APCE. I'm going to start with an 12X10 APCE prop first.

I appreciate the time answer my question and uploading pictures. I was thinking of purchasing the plane and seeing what kind of retracts I could find in the US to fit since it doesn't come with standard gear.

I am thinking about picking up one or possibly two of these. I would like to set it up for glow, and wondering what kind of mechanical retracts you guys recommend and where to get them. I've been told Supra/Great Planes, but can't find Great Planes tricycle retracts on Tower's site anymore. Are the Hobbico retracts the same? Or does it look like I'll have to go with air retracts? Any suggestions would be great. I have been told several times to stay away from the electric retracts when going with glow power.

Hi Karl, and others!
I have looked at the tips that Hanno gives and are available on the website but I am unsure if the additional down-thrust is required for just the electric set up or the glow powered version also.
I plan to use an 0s55 so can anyone confirm that I need to increase the down-thrust and if so exact;y how thick the washers should be. I don't think I will find a 1 cent coin with a hole in in the UK!

thanks

Joe Lachowski,

Have you flown yours yet with the recommended electric power? I am thinking of getting one and making it electric, but I saw one fly electric last year and the power didn't seem like it was enough to me and the duration definitely wasn't there. He was using a different motor than what was recommended, and not sure what battery configuration. I watched Jim Kimbro fly his, powered by a Rossi 60, and it made me think that glow is definitely the way to go. It flat out hauled the mail and flew amazing. But I do love the convenience of electric, so even coming close to that type of performance would be good to me.

Hope to hear some feedback soon!

Take Care,
Jamie

I believe it did. He had to add almost 6oz to the tail since the Rossi is heavy though.

Problem: Heavy (Rossi) engine.

Solution: OS .65 AX. Mucho power and lighter. Come out to the field tomorrow and watch one pull the P-7.

Robert,

My nitro one is already in progress with an OS .55AX with tuned pipe which is the recommended power plant. I am just thinking about also getting an electric and wondering what luck others have had. Looks like my original question to Joe about his electric setup got side tracked a bit.

Hi Angel,
if you go to the web site for schweighofer, you will see what the recommend an os 55ax with tuned pipe ( just engines mid size) and either an 11*9 or a 12*7 apc prop. If you read Jon's review you will see that is his setup. That is what I am going with but I have not finished building it yet. From what I hear you do not need more power and certainly not more weight than the 55.
as for servos, I guess reasonable digitals will do, I am using std futaba digi.
good luck and let's us know what you go for.

I fly mine with the stock OS AX .65 and it pulls it all you could ever want, plus some. E flight nose retract will not hold up, went thru two entirely new nose gears before switching to a Lander nose gear and strut. Got a Mac header to try a pipe down the road, but pulling a 11 x 7 APC at 13,600-13,700 static.

No wonderful methanol smell or beautiful smoke trail either.
