Default 4 stroke KAOS

Has anyone tried an OS 70 4 stoke on a 40 size KAOS. I was just looking on Towers site and they suggest a 48 to 52. Think a 70 might be a little over kill, of just go ahead and make the flight controls real big and fly it 3D[&o]?

If you are talking about the Tower Kaos ARF I expect you would be pretty nose heavy with the 4S. I had to add a lot of lead in the tail of mine and I only have an Irvine 53 on it and it is an ounce or more lighter than a OS 46. The 53 does pull it along smartly though. If you could find a Kaos kit you could move the firewall back to get it to balance.

A 4 stroker in a Kaos? Anybody else agree with me that this borders
on blasphemy? Its like putting ketchup on hot dogs. There are some
things that are simply not done.

Seriously though...I have a 40 size Super Kaos built from an
original Joe Bridi kit and power it with a TT46 Pro with Tower
tuned muffler. It literally rips. The TT46 just BARELY fits in this
plane, A larger motor would require major modification.

Another pilot in our club has the Tower Kaos 40 ARF and powers
his with an OS 46 AX. Its nearly as fast as mine despite being
a slightly larger airframe. The Tower ARF has more room in it
for a larger motor but the fit is still a bit tight.

These planes are perfect with a strong 46 and fly the
way they were meant to. I dont see any advantage
to a 4 stroke in this plane.

Hey,... I like ketchup on my hot dogs!!

Seriously,... I built a Tower 40 Kaos from a kit and made the necessary modifications for a Saito 72. I absolutely love the airplane!! The tail was lengthend a bit (can't remember exactly how much), the servos are aft of the trailing edge of the wing and the battery pack is behind the wing as well. As far as the cosmetics, I used the tail feathers from an Ultimate Kaos and a Dirty Birdy canopy,... hence the name "Dirty Kaos".

Let me know if you need any more info on my four stroke modifications. By the way,... its not a 3D plane by any means,... at least not the way I've got the controls setup. I used this plane in pattern competition for two years in a row in Intermediate class. Of course, I got my butt kick by all the large 1.20 size and two meter planes, but it was still fun!!

Sincerely,
Steve T

You obviously never been to Chicago then. Hot dogs and pizza
are two things we take very seriously. Hot dogs do not have
ketchup on them and pizza does not contain salad or fruit.

BTW nice looking plane...

Any idea how fast it flies with the Saito 72? Mine does
right around 100 mph with the TT46. Not quite as fast
as my old Sig Kougar but real close.

Hi Mike,...

I'll agree with you about the salad on Pizza, ha!!

Thanks for the kind words about my Kaos. I doubt she's as fast as your, but sure is smooth and graceful!! And for me,... that's what its all about.

You know the old saying...nothing flies quite like a Kaos.
Whatever you power it with.

I've seen it done. The plane needed larger wheels for better ground clearance(large prop). I'm flying an O.S. .46FX and I get complaints for flying so fast. One reccomendation that I would give to anyone flying this type of ballistic missile( vintage pattern plane)- don't fly with other people around.

Woops,

You are getting complaints for flying too fast????? I haven't seen any speed limits posted at the field lately. Always amazes me how some people at a field feel the need to dictate flying style as well as what engine (2/4 stroke) or what type plane you fly. As long as you fly safely, that is the only rule you need. I think you need a Brushfire w/a Jett 90 RE. That will give your fellow pilots an indication of what speed really is. It's always raining somewhere.

My modified Kaos kit is a smidge over five pounds and I found that the OS 46 was not able to pull it unlimited vertical at ballistic speed. It would pull unlimited vertical but would slow down some. I swapped out the 46 for an Irvine 53 and now I have ballistic vertical. It will do a vertical hover but the control surfaces are not large enough to hold it in an unlimited hover. It is kind of amazing to see a Kaos fly that fast with the fat Kaos wing but it does haul. Not as fast as my Tiporare but pretty darn fast.

I always make a few low balistic passes on the first flight of the day, I find that after that most people want to watch much more than share the airspace. LOL

I fly my kaos 40 with an os 52 4 strock It performs well but not like the webra 40 I had in it. The 70 4 strock will not fit without major modification.

The original Kaos 40 is a bit small for a .70 four-stroke. However, if you must, move the firewall back 1/2" and build a battery box with an external hatch into the fuselage behind the trailing edge of the wing. The new, lighter OS FL-70 might be the way to go. I bought one a while back and am about to mount it in my el cheapo $38 Trainer ARF from Raiden Tech. You will only need a six ounce tank with the .70 for average flight times, so moving the firewall back won't create a hardship.

Maybe a Saito .56 or .65? Proped with a high pitched prop.

Or - obtain a Tower Kaos 40 ARF. The 70 would be perfect for that. I now have two NIB samples and a NIB FL-70. We shall see how the combo works.

The weight of the 65 FS and 70 FS is an ounce or so more than the Irvine 53 so weight should not be a big issue other than needing add about ½ ounce more weight to the tail. My MonoKote ARF Kaos needed quite a bit of weight in the tail to balance with the Irvine 53 and OS 46. My Kaos kit balances perfectly with the Irvine 53 or OS 56 and is about ½ lb lighter than the ARF. The 70 FS will be a tight fit and getting it to mount back far enough could be a challenge. The Irvine 53 has about 1.7 HP and pulls much stronger than the OS 46. The Irvine moves the kit very well so a 70 FS in the ARF my not be enough power. I tried mounting one of my RJL K.61s in the ARF and the fuselage front was too narrow for it to fit.

Actually, my O.S. .46 FX combo will hover. I've done torq rolls with it and rolling circles also.

Yes, but our Kaos kits are about ½ lb lighter than the ARF! My kit Koas will hover too and also easily climb vertical out of the hover! My Monokote ARF is just too heavy for a hover even with the Irvine 53 power.
