Gentlemen
We will fly Open Sportsman and Open Expert again at Cullman, Al on April 22 and 23. The only restriction is that planes cannot exceed 70 inches square.
This is a continuing experiment. The intent is to allow the use of older pattern plane and current ARFs to compete. Pipes and retracts are fine in this class. No one has ever tried a bipe, but that might be fun, too. Ther are a lot of Ultimates around that are smaller than 70", and so is the Goldberg Bucker Jungmann.

Steve-
I won't be down there yet for this one, but my Bridi Escape is coming along for later on. Rossi 61 rear exhaust, Macs pipe, Southern retracts. Looking very retro and good. Only change is to go with mains only as a taildragger. Won't be able to tell the difference once they come up.
Gonna have two SPA ships now, Deception and Escape, one for each class.

I won't be attending, but only because I'm not well enough yet.
Could you elaborate on the 70 inches square requirement? I don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. Thanks.

I think they are saying a max length of 70" and a max wingspan of 70".
Current AMA pattern is 99.9% dominated by full two-meter planes at over 78"...just
too big for a lot of folks shops or vehicles.

Low Rider is 100% correct.
Remember that this is not an official class. It is my experiment to try to suck some folks back into competition, and to draw in some who don't have "proper" equipment. Those who have never stood in front of the judges cannot appreciate the tension and the thrill. This is an attempt to draw them.
Eash of us puts himself on the line each time we advance throttle and start up the runway. At every skill level, we saying "Watch THIS." to all standing around. Competition just goes a step further. "Watch THIS" has rules. He who follows the rules the closest wins.

As a graduate of Steve's Open Class Experiment last fall, I can tell you that it's a lot of fun, and the regular SPA guys will happily fly with you and help you out. I enjoyed it so much, I'll be back to several events this year (hopefully) with a regular class plane. Thanks to Steve for reaching out to some of us that don't have the "per the rules" equipment and giving us a chance to enjoy SPA....and get hooked.
