I started sanding work on the lower fairing of the wing. After a little sanding I decided it would look better to extend the fillet at the leading edge of the wing along the edge of the wing fairing.

While I was mixing resin, I coated the inside of the engine compartment with resin to seal the wood and fuel proof it.

So, are you going to use your technique of painting the wing's center section? As beautiful as the woodworking is, I can't wait to see this plane covered and painted. Do you have photos of the bottom of Yoshioka's '73 BA?

Thanks rainedave! Yes, I’m painting the wing center section and using MonoKote on the wing panels. I do not have any photos of the bottom of the wing. The blue and red wraps around the wing leading edge but I do not know what color is under the wing.

While I was doing some final sanding on the wing center section I decided that the square cutouts for the wing bolts looked really lame (I thought you guys were going to tell me if I did something lame). To fix my screw up, I made some cardboard tubes from file folder paper and tacked them in place with CA. I then filled the square opening with micro-balloons and resin. After it setup I sanded it smooth with the wing fairing.

If we said you were doing something lame, than you might stop the thread and we're never get to see the completed model.

Great! Now you tell me. I was wondering why I had the spring loaded hatch parts left over.

Not as lame as having a clear canopy and no pilot. Man glad I vented. Had to get that out.

Dang! I did fail to spot that one and I spent all that time carving and painting a scale bust of Yoshioka to go in the cockpit.

You can use it on your second Blue Angel. Nice primer work on the wing. Also "Lowe's sells electric heaters?" .... it gets cold in Atlanta? It's warm today in Manitoba, it's 33 degrees. I'm trying to figure out how to get the garage warm enough to work in when it drops another 20 degrees.

View of the bottom wing fairing after applying some Bondo brand lacquer glazing and spot filler putty on a few low spots. I like to put the glaze on the low spots, sand them well and then recheck them to see if the spot is filled. After I’m sure that the low spots are filled and smooth then I’ll sand most of the primer off getting ready for the next primer coat. The fillets need a little more sanding to take down some high spots.

Hi 8178,

I can´t stand it no longer. I have to build one too. Where do I buy the plans for the MK Blue Angel ? Can you support me with a copy (Price) ? I live in Sweden and used to fly the MACH-I, ATLAS 60 and CURARE during the 70-ies. I never built the Blue Angel back then so it would be nice with a scratch building project during winter (Another 8 months).

Do the plans also cover the wooden built wings (No balsa sandwiched foam for me) ?

I would be very greatful for your reply.

With kind Regards,
Gunnar Snellman

Gunnar,

You can get the plans and canopy from Dan on this link http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4039073/tm.htm You might see if he would share the wing and stab tracings with you for a fee because not all the ribs you need are shown on the plans.

Hope you have as much fun as I’ve had building mine!

There has been some discussion on the forum about what classic engine to use for Ballistic Pattern aircraft. My favorite is the OS 61SF ABC-P engine. There are a lot of them available on eb*y including the RF. So far I’ve found two NIB OS 61SF ABC-P engines on eb*y and also some low time used engines. Here is an example of a very low time one for $102.00. It needed very little clean up and it was missing the needle valve and ratchet spring but they are available from Tower. Tower has all the parts for the SF ABC and ring engines except for the pump parts.

This is another example of a lightly used OS 61SF pump engine from eb*y. It was missing the throttle arm, needle valve ratchet spring and the woodruff key for the prop drive assembly.

The butterfly in the carb was stuck solid so I disassembled what I could and soaked the parts in fuel to free it up. I then pulled all the parts out and cleaned them with fuel. The pump carb is fairly complicated but easy to disassemble. I also flushed the pump with fuel.

As always, there is some risk in buying used engines on eb*y. In this case the engine was in good shape and even though the seller thought it was an ABC engine it turned out to be a ring engine. It is sometimes hard for the seller to see the ring in the SF engines and often do not show up well in pictures. The seller refunded $20 of the $102 selling price to compensate for the mistake and I decided to keep it rather than sending it back.

At this point I have five OS SF pump engines so I should be in good shape for a few years. I think I’ll put the used ABC engine on the Blue Angel so I can keep my two new engines NIB.

Hi 8178,

Wow. You have really stocked engines. Would you sell me one of your NIB OS 61SF ABC-P engines for my blue angel ?

With the white primer on I rechecked the fitment of the wing to see how the seams looked.

8178, you literally work within 1/100th of an inch tolerances. I'd probably drive all the way to GA just to see it fly.
