I guess there's a lot of people who have more money than they know what
to do with. These early pattern ships are so easy to build I can build one without
plans. The Kwik-Fli airplanes don't even have tapered wings.
Doesn't make sense to spend these outrageous amounts of money when
plans for all of them are available and it probably only takes 30 to 40 dollars
worth of balsa to build one.

my 1st build in 1980 was a Kadet Mk II. i bought a kit off of ebay just for the memories. i shrink wrapped it and put it on a shelf in my build room where i can see it. no plans to build it though. maybe thats what the buyer of the kwik fly did.

I built a couple of those. Going for that amount of money. It would be easy to get the boxes made, duplicating it. Duplicate the kit about a 100 times, put one a week on e-bay, and 100 X $400: $40K, for about a $10K or less, time and money. Would that work?
Make sense?

Some friends and I were talking about this sort of thing...like maybe trying to re-capture a moment in time, in a box 'o balsa? Re-live some pleasant memories?
I think a lot of it is Rose colored glasses...not that there's anything wrong with that...if ya got the money, who's to say, right!?
Just makes me wish I hadn't sold or traded off all the "old" stuff I used to have back in the 70's
Trying to re-kit the vintage stuff just doesn't seem to work...it doesn't have "patina" or the "feel", ya know?

Lotta dough for a pile of wood. Now a Skyglas Phoenix, (finished), could be worth it. What is that guy gonna do with that Kwik-Fly ?
A couple of years ago, my wife and I were browsing around in an antique shop in GA. Hanging on the ceiling, was an old U-Control plane, Puddle Jumper, or one of the Zilche's. It was beat to s--t. Price: $375.00. LOL. It was a toy antique, the lady said. Didn't even have an engine or tank.

Either the bidder had no idea, and didn't bother to do a search, or this poor ol' plane is destined for the shelf.
About 5 years ago when I got back into R/C I was on the look out for a nice CG Skylark MKII.
I found one and paid a bit for it, $220[:@]. My old modeling buddies felt it was stupid to buy a kit that was outdated and then plan build a somewhat collector kit. My arguement is that I always wanted one to build and fly, just couldn't afford it earning $3.50/ hour back then. I could have searched for plans, got some wood, maybe a canopy, but I figured that I would have spent around $100 for that. Another $100 or so for a mint kit sounds better, but $455 for a kit that is available for $150... just not original, come on. Now there's people who think any old plane is worth a crazy amount of money. Like the antique lady trying to sell a beat up C/L airframe for 375. I'll bet she has no idea what name the plane is. I don't know maybe it's that "rustic" phase that seems to be the fashion.
I really wish manufacturers would come out with some good decent kits!!!
Or maybe the companies that are still producing kits, come out with a new kit every once in a while.

There was another one...it sold for about half of what the one in the thread title sold for...about two and a quarter.
Just out of curiosity, I'm watching the Cutlass and Banshee that are running now...wonder what they'll go for?
