the not so easy task of blending the canopy. i was having second thoughts after bootalini's aurora thread was refreshed and i took another look at his canopy work. but the unfinished results are fine so far.

i'm trying to blend the fillet around the leading edge. what a pita. i switched from fiberglass epoxy resin and microballoons to evercoat or i would have never got this far. evercoat is more brittle but it dries in seconds vs days with epoxy. i had just enough room to slip a strip of 1/64 ply between the wing and the fuse to strengthen the fillet. once i finish blending the fillet to the fuse i will glass over it.

the plans can be obtained from dan at carolina custom aircraft. there are no instructions other than what's drawn on the plans. which version of the BA do you have? any photos or is it in the box? i will have to look for dan's address. although it might be shown earlier in the thread or the 8178's BA build thread. keep us posted please, we love Blue Angels!

Thanks dhal22. I have sent an email to them (him).
The box art and info on it do not indicate what variation it is. Its probably the original design.
I received the kit a couple of days ago and other than a quick look haven't examined it in detail. The canopy rear is warped, the balsa and box has alot of smoke on it, Parts are in disarray in the box,no damage. A red plastic spinner and a fueltank and some hardware are in the box. Joe

8187 build has fotos of the plans. Used them to determine if kit is complete. seems to be very complete except for W1 & W2 Have half of each, front half of W1 , rear half of W2. Dificult to make out the center section of the wing in the foto. Haven't heard from Dan. Will not atempt build without plans.

No progress today as i attended one of our club's big annual events (Warbirds over Atlanta). this photo was before it really got crowded. the crowd was triple or more later in the day. it was great to see Mac Hodges' new B-29 flying.

I decided to add some extra throw to the elavator (beyond the 20mm shown on the plans) in case i want to do some 3d flying someday.[X(] also i'm shooting for gapless hinge lines.

i'm down to sanding the fuse again. i reapplied a couple of coats of polycrylic while i was coating the fillet glass strips. i will definitely primer the fuse tomorrow. i'm finally getting close to the end.

David,

what kind of hinges are you using?

I prefer to glue in after - it allows much more ease of finishing (sanding, cleaning, polishing) but I know that Crank glues in before and does a nice job of it. I just wouldn't trust the paint from not entering the hinges. And if they are CA hinges (which I doubt) then paint on them is not great. You must be using hinge points of some sort. Did you produce a countersink in the control surfaces within the surface?

David.
