Default Deception Rescue

Hi,

After much consideration, I have decided on my Christmas break project.

I want an SPA legal plane. I toyed with building an Curare from plans (and intend to later) but decided to rescue a half built Deception that I purchased last year from a auction reseller (Wichita Radio Control Club).

The plan is in ok shape, some tears and many wrinkles but usable.

The wing core is pretty rough. Appears to be mouse-eaten at several corners. The landing gear cutouts are badly done. I want to make this a taildragger as I fly off of grass most of the time (is that still SPA legal???)

The horizontal is sheeted and looks to be in ok shape.

The fuse sides are partially completed and broken/dented in some places - looks like an easy fix.

The canopy is here and in good shape.

I can't tell if all of the wood is here, I'll just fill it in with my stock as I go.

I've never posted pictures here before but I intend to learn that today.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just finished cleaning the cores with soap/water/brush. They look alot better now.

Next I intend to sheet them with 1/16 balsa and Southern's Sourghum. I'll fill in the missing foam from the edges after sheeting.

I've never done this but I think that crumbled foam and a glue binder will do the trick. Epoxy or something thinner like Elmers/water?

Anyone tried this?

take a look at using gorilla glue or probond glue (both are polyurethane). i love seeing my wings after the glue has set up. the expanding glue is forced into the foam creating an incredible bond. and i roll it until the is only a light sheen on the foam.

I think that the only way to do this with gorilla glue is to clamp the cores in the shucks (? correct term?) while the glue dries. My foam is very damaged, so I can't completely clamp the cores with the foam.

The Southern's Sorghum method can be done without complete clamping because it instantly sets when the parts touch.

Is there another method with the gorilla glue? I agree that the bond is stronger.

After re-reading your post, I realize that you may have been suggesting gorilla glue for the filler (that I had asked about). That's a good idea, and I think I'll do that. Thanks!

Scott,

Thanks for the offer, it's nice to know that I have a potential fallback plan if I mess the wing up.

So far so good, I've repaired the damage on the fuse side and started on the wing sheeting. I'll post pics when at a good point.

When peeling the tape off of the horizontal stabilizer it became apparent that this is an OLD bird. The masking tape wrapped around the stab cores was like paper mache.

Note to self: don't use masking tape to temporarily hold something together for 20 years

Sounds good.. My cores are done in 3/4 pound virgin foam and as seen on my site You can have custom work done, like Rusty did for retracts.

Let me know if there is anythong you need.

what about a blend of styrofoam crumbles and glue of some sort? or expanding foam? you could trim that after it dries. too bad the new housing market is dead, you could drop in during an application of icynene foam insulation somewhere and have them shoot a quick blast in that spot. cool stuff, that icynene insulation.

I hadn't thought about expanding foam! That would work really well. I could just pour/squirt it in from the top (with the wing set vertical) and let it cure. Then cut it flush with the razor saw.

I hope it doesn't. I just sent my kid to Walmart for a can of "great stuff". I wrapped the edges with masking taped and sprayed it in. It's drying now. So far, so good.

I'll post a pic of the result. Looks like I just wasted the whole can on the job, though. It looks like the valve will be clogged when done.

If it eats the foam then I'll take have to resort to "plan B".

Expanding foam was my first thought too. Not being an expert on the subject though, I would first want to know what kind of density it has. My recollection is that it is pretty dense stuff. You might want to check on the weight first. You might add several ounces to the wing panel (only one if the photos tell the story). But I suppose it's going to be better than a glue mix.

Another idea might be white foam crumbles, microballoons and just enough glue to hold it together. Although I haven't used polyurethane glue (yet), I'm under the impression that it is hard to cut/sand.

Looking forward to this one. I'm working on my D15 fuse sides and formers at the moment.

that's the problem with can foam. once you use it it's done. there is no known solvent for the stuff so it expands in the tube/nozzle and dries. so what, it serves a great purpose here.

It's not attacking the foam. All is good. I'll let that sit overnight.

The added weight will be negligible. What you see in the picture is the extent of it. I would imagine that building technique would be more significant in terms of added weight.

I guess I could have just left the void and fiber-glassed the center joint (with an extra-wide layer), but I think the added glass layer would have been more weight than the foam repair.

I think that inadequate cure time left the void in the center. This stuff is easy to trim, feels as firm as the parent foam, and is easily obtainable. I'll definitely keep this in my bag of tricks.

tertiary butyl ether solvent will dissolve urethane foam... yeah that nasty stuff... that they have removed from gasoline.....

David,

No, it's not lifted. It looks ragged because the edge of the foam is missing some of the little balls from the years of hangar rash.

I have now glued the leading and trailing edges and the wing is structurally sound. From the outside, you will never be able to guess about the condition of the cores.

I have used a new (to me) product for this operation that worked really well. Is it OK to give product names here. I don't want to advertise, just advise (and mostly get advise).

I'll post a pic later today after sanding.
