RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
Hi Everyone,
Today I added 6 parts between the firewall and F2 on the fuse to build up the nose. The next step will be to mount the Hitec HS 85 BB servo that I will be using for nose gear steering. You can see in the picture that there will be plenty of room for it. I am working on the mount for it. One elevator was shaped per plans. I set the second elevator up to show how I shape it. I glue scrap on the centerline of the trailing edge, top and bottom a long the leading edge and sand to the scrap. It works well. The blocks needed for different parts of the fuse were glued together and sanded.
I selected the Webra Speed 70 to power the Mach 1. It has 2.5 HP and weighs in at 20.5 OZ. Enjoy the pictures. More to follow when I have time.

RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
Hello Everyone,
So far today I completed a relief cut on the inside of the fuselage for the nose gear steering linkage. Not pretty, but it works. I added the 3/8" square stock and the 3/8" Tri stock to the top of the fuse from the front of F1 to the rear of F5. More to follow when the glue is dry.

RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
Hi Guys,
The glue has dried. The top and ends have been sanded smooth. I took a cross section picture so you can get an idea what things look like. In the last picture, there is a Mach 1 in there, somewhere. A lot of carving and sanding will be required. I decided to order some blocks of soft balsa today so I can make a comparison between doing the blocks the way the kit was designed ( laminating and joining together with glue) and just buying blocks the correct size. I will use the method that results in less weight. I have an idea on how this is going to go. More to follow.

RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
Well, Dan's Mach 1 short kit kit just arrived ... and wow, is it beautiful!
Some of the cleanest laser cutting I have ever seen, and some really creative design ideas (about which Dan has already answered some questions by email).
It was really something to look at those plans, remembering the last time I saw them .. which I think was 34 (!) years ago (I am really that old???).
I presume they are landing all over the country in the next few days, and there are going to be some really happy guys out there.
thank you, Dan!

Bootalini, Jeff,
Dan at Laser Tech is very talented. He should cut the first Sequel by the weekend. Look for a build thread on that shortly. The Sweetater is close behind. Dan will be offering canopies for both in his short kits. Many more classics are being considered. The demand is there. How about laser cut versions of: Compensator, Curare, Cutlass, Tiporare, Phantom, UFO, Revenger, Arrow, Atlas, Super Kaos 60, Escape,
? Let Dan know what your favorites are and what you would like to see.

There is definetly a demand for old school pattern planes. I suggest a focus on the most popular designs. Curare, Tiporare, UFO, Revenger...I would definetly be a customer!

RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
I have the Mach 1 on order and hopefully it will arrive today. I would like to see more of the older designs myself but why do the ones that are already done, The Troublemaker, banshee have been done but there are so many other designs that have not and I think those would have better appeal than making the same ones over and over by a different kit maker, you start looking like the ARF makers with everyone having the same variety.

Hi Guys,
It's great to read everyone's ideas. This is what it's all about. The flow of information. I would like to see the more popular designs as well. I'm not a mind reader, but my guess is that Dan @ Laser Tech will want to do the more popular classics that have not been done. It also comes down to being cost effective. It takes time and effort to go from start to laser cut parts. There has to be a return for the time and effort.
For those that have a Mach 1 from Laser Tech, please post pictures of your builds here too. It's all good.

Normally I am all about retail competition, but I think this is an area where everybody should try to not step on each other if possible. If one guy has plane already kitted, pick another popular one to kit from the era. Hopefully companies can work together a bit on spreading the word on who has what. If Joe calls company A and asks for a kit that Co. A does not kit, I would hope that they would refer them to Co. B that does kit it.
I know that is not the greatest business practice in the world, but who is really making any real money off of any of this??? I just would hate to see everybody get into competition making the same kits.

RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
Received the kit today, this is some of the best laser cutting I have seen. I am off to the Toledo show so it will have to wait until I get back. I am looking at a couple of plans to have laser cut and will send to Laser Technologies for cutting.

I would probably vote for the Arrow. I would think that Great Planes owns the rights to the Kaos??

RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
Leo,
This is very interesting. I have never followed a build in this manner. You are doing a great job.
As far as which pattern ships should be revived my vote is for the LA1. I have one of these that I have been flying since 1993. I wore out the Hanno Special that I started with so two years ago I found another Hanno new in the box in England which I have been flying at least once a week ever since.
With the Hanno pipe this thing is a rocket and a real joy to fly. I have had it radar timed at 107mph.
Leo, I will be following your build with interest.

Pete,
I'm glad you are enjoying the thread. Dan at Laser Tech has promised more classics as time goes on. I should be able to get back to work on the Mach 1 this weekend. I had a few hours to go through the Toledo Show today. My first time, WOW. Great show.

RE: Mach 1 Laser Kit Build
Hi Guys,
I was able to shape the LE & TE on the top of the Stab today. Sheeting tomorrow.
Dan from Laser Tech sent me an email saying that the Shear Webs were left off his wing plan. Be sure to add them to the front (LE) side of the spars when you build your wing. More to follow.
