The folks over on the main pattern site said I should have posted my question here... Apparently I'm looking for a "Classic" pattern kit. I've been out of the hobby for awhile and didn't realize there was a "classic" flavor of pattern aircraft.

How do you like the Aurora?? I have a kit which was called the Aurora 90 and designed for a 90 4cycle power plant...There is a guy who is in the process of building one right now:

Also the Calypso is allot like the Joker...I've seen them powered with a YS 91 which was a sweet set-up:

Allot of the guys are running 90 four strokes in Curare's for SPA....There is a wood short kit available for that one...

There are lots of options...Those are just a couple quickies that popped into mind...

Yes, 70's flyer has significant first hand knowledge of these lovelies.

Additionally, what you also saw was a pilot flying a model. More than likely the pilot could have flown a simple, trainer type of model with a similar flair and smoothness...this is what pattern flying is. Learning to fly with precision is ultimately revealed and applied by the local club members clammoring about the smoothness and tracking of the local "Mr. Smoothie" flying a Falcon 56.

Virtually ANY properly built, set-up and basically trimmed modern model design, adequately powered can provide hours of joy and a tool for creating precision flight.

My very biased and personal favorites are the Focus Sport with YS.91 (about $300 for the kit), Falcon 56 with modern .40, Sig Kommander with modern .40, Carl Goldberg Tiger with modern .60, Oxalys 50 with YS 63, Intruder old school now available for about $230 ARF price, with a modern .61 or 4 cycle, virtually any Yak model from 40" to 120"...

I can't remember the name, it was around 16 years ago. I think they were in the Mirimar area (but not the one on the base). The guy was an airline pilot, I don't remember his name, but he flew with JR electronics... He was quiet but friendly and just seemed like a professional among amateurs. Pretty much everyone stopped what they were doing to watch him fly.
