I have two SPA projects coming along I thought may be of interest. One is a scratch built Kirkland Mustang-X to be powered by an OS 55 AX and the other is a Wing Mfg. Phoenix-5 kit to be powered by an AXI 4130 electric. Both will be fixed gear taildraggers.
I'm trying to get both ready to prime & paint in the next couple of weeks.

Dave,
Where'd you get the plans for the Mustang-X? I have a copy of the magazine article and plans, but it's not very clear owing to the gray background they printed it on, and they don't sell them on rcstore.com either (as far as I can tell).
Thanks.

Andy, I had a set of plans from years ago when the plans were first published and always planned to build but it never got to the top of my list. Somewhere in moving a couple of years ago I couldn't find them (probably packed up somewhere) and I got Jon Weichbrodt on this forum to make a copy for me. If you want a set I can make you a copy or I'll put you in touch with Jon's e-mail and perhaps he has an extra set. There was a thread about it a couple of years ago.

Kirkland Mustang-X. Is this the plane Jim Kirkland used to win so many contest back in the early 70's? Your plane and the Tiger Tail by Ron Chidgey are very similar. I have the 60% version of the Tiger Tail, which is called the Bob Cat. Has a lot of hanger rash, but some day I'll repair it and install the retracts. Would like to use my Pro-Line Single stick in it, but need to upgrade the TX. It would be great if I knew someone who knew how to update my Pro-Line TX. Planes look great!

What would be really great is if you could get them to www.FullSizePlans.com so he can scan and PRESERVE them!

rainedave,
I built, flew a Mustang X back in the '70s. Still have the plans. They are not in the best shape. I plan to make the trip to the not so LHS this week and will look for a Kinkos or similar that might copy them for me. Can they put them on a disc?

I think Kinko's will burn files for you (you might have to supply the disk).
My second r/c plane was the old Jemco/Marks/Dynaflite Fun Scale P-51. I've been reminiscing about it lately and was actually looking at the Frank Baker P-51 plans a while back (later kitted by Fliteglas). I like the Mustang X even better because of it's pattern-like proportions. I'd really like to build one, maybe even scale it up a bit.

David,
Just looked it over and the lines are very faded. It has been rolled up in a box for most of its life. Probably needs to be 'gone over' to darken the lines. I'll try anyway. Gonna look through some kits and maybe copy some other plans too.

Thanks David! I'll go over these sites and see what I can do. I actually have an Ace Single Stick that is up to date, but my old Pro-Line and I go way back.

The Topflite arf is 64.5" so the canopy would most likely look fine on a Mustang-X 60:

I have the kit. If there is enough interest I could have more of the original canopies reproduced by sending mine out and having a mold made. That would take a few weeks. I have always intended to build the kit and put a Rossi 45 in the nose, that would turn it into a real Mustang!

Looks and maybe even performance aside, the more rearward canopy is more like the actual P-51. I do like this airplane. I'll probably have to put it on my dream build list.

Thanks Tom for the web site. I actually do have the Bob Cat plane in the garage that I built years ago and didn't finish but kept it with me and man you would not believe the hanger rash it's gone through. I'm still going to finish it, but the Mustang X was one I really always wanted to build. Thanks again.

Chiefk,
When I built mine, back in the late '70s, Itwas a taildragger withCarl Goldberg retracts. Can't remember for sure whether it had a ST 46 or an OS40/45FSR. Fun plane.

Terry,

As a SPA project, I'd let it be fixed gear to save the weight and keep it simple, but I know it must have looked good "wheels up".
