Hey, any time.
So what's it going to be - a European Magic or Arrow or an American Escape or Deception?
Check this 10 sec video out - it looks like the guy's got a 16" prop on it!

How's the finish on that slick BA coming along?
David.

It seems I was incorrect about the "10% scale up". The plans I was referring to with the 65" wingspan are actually an 18% scale up from the original Kirkland design. I'd still prefer to build it that way, if it were SPA legal.

Sorry about that...

I flew the Electric P-5 for the first flight today. One of my two batteries had a dead cell so I only had one battery to fly with which also has a weak cell (It's making the return trip back too). As a result I only made two short trim flights. As I suspected it's nose heavy but not as much as I thought it would be. I'm moving the rudder servo to the tail to help. It needed some left aileron and a couple clicks of up (nose heavy) but otherwise flew very well. All up weight is 6.87 lbs with the Zippy 6S 3700 pack. It needs some rudder to aileron mix and I need more aileron throw as the roll rate was a little slow for my taste. Once I get new batteries delivered this coming week and the CG moved back I'll be able to better trim it with the needed mixes I hope. I think it's a keeper and right now I'm planning to fly it in the Asheville SPA contest on 7/18 & 19.

Congratulations Dave !
It sounds like you will have something special to share with us in Asheville weekend after next
My Curare was the only electric powered entry at the SPA event in Knoxville last month, so it will me nice to have some company.
I predict you will be VERY pleased with the power once your Zippy Rhino 3700's are installed.

New birds all finished.
I did the Kirkland Mustang X in a Semi Miss America scheme. Haven't flown it yet but maybe this week end weather permitting. It has an OS .55AX for power. Phoenix 5 has electric power (AXI 4130-16, CC 80 ESC, 6S 3700 Rhino batteries) and flies very well.

Looking at the plans, I kept thinking the canopy is too far back. I made a comparison image with the canopy moved forward in the top profile. I think it looks a bit better.

If you're flying scale, move it forward, if you're flying pattern, put it where Jim Kirkland put it. You can be sure that he moved it around a bit before showing it this way on the plans - I'll bet.

Want to hear how that Mustang X flys. I'm seriously considering the same setup you have. Nice color scheme, but your cockpit looks a little small???

One short flight on the Mustang X today. CG seemed about right, needed a little down elevator and 2 clicks aileron trim. Seems to be a pretty nice flying plane. Elevator and aileron were both too sensative so they need dialing back a little. OS-55AX started up on the first flip and the idle mixture is pretty close - a little rich I think but I had the HS needle sloppy rich for the first runs. I ran one tank on the bench and then one flight. It was very windy and gusty making it difficult to determine what trimming it needs so I just put it away and I'll wait for a nicer day.
Cockpit is a little small but it was a canopy I had from some kit I didn't use and I didn't have to search for a source of something larger.

Sounds like a great first flight under less than ideal conditions.... new engine.... gusty winds....
Just a note that my OS .55AX was pretty unreliable for its first 10 flights or so, then super reliable ever since, and it's powered at least 150 flights since then.
Be sure to provide some followups as you get it sorted out.
Thanks,
Greg
