Default Old time pattern pictures

Since I've been in the hobby forever I thought it would be cool to share some old pictures I found from the early 70's. Since I'm for Chicago I'll admit they are leaning more towrds the local but still I think you might enjoy some of them.
I leave the comments off and see how well you guys can do identifying the people in them. Mike Mueller

Mike,

Your pictures are all a little bit "static".(LOL)
Sometimes one black and white picture says more than 20 coloured.

Here, action, problems with my Super Tigre, piston and lining failure during pattern contest.

Location ESTEC the Netherlads.

And still....... on my knees!

Cee's you've got the good ones. I flew at the first 4 TOC's and thats the first time I flew with folks from other countries than the USA.
It still amazes me how the pattern community is so similar with people around the world. It's like a universal language. Mike

Mike, mayb a nice story about dead stick!

During Pattern flying we also make fun.

I did pull a paper computer tape, hundreds of meters, two big rolls connected together, to let other pilots catch it.

For that I did use a Super Tigre 40 /45 on my little plane.

On one moment motor stops and all the pilots shouted,

O

because there was for a moment an O in the air.

I could not drop the tape and I did have a dead stick!!!
I did have to dive vertical and land with the tape, and look to the picture!!
Tape was wound around the crankshaft behind the propeller and didn’t break on that moment. That was the reason of my “dead stick”.
Yes the Super Tigres did have a “bus” behind the propeller and with that, I did not know, they could bit their own tail.
This did happen in Leeuwarden, between the pattern rounds.

BTW Mike

In Europe there are many connections/contacts? between the clubs of the countries,
For many years I did fly gliders in Germany and met people from England and France, also in the Netherlands.

Yes it was Norm's Avenger. He's with a local guy Bruce Balco who used to blend our fuel an old brand called Go-Pop.

Post 2 -7 is Bob Smith of the CA fame. He was a real good flyer in both pattern and Plylon. Mike

Mike,

Great photos, but I can't help noticing that they are fading with time. You might consider having any that you care about "restored" by someone who does that sort of thing. Here's a few photos that I care about that have been restored...

Dan.

I did scan my pictures a few days back, and then they come, all these nice memories.
I already did show this picture in another thread but I show it again.
This is during pattern flying the same day with the same plane as the streamer (when I am right you mean the computer tape story?).
It was my back up plane, my pattern plane did have retract problems.

Of course you do not take any risks when you fly with your "back up" plane!!

There is also an USA plane in the pits.

yes the Computer Tape Story !

the most fun i have ever had in RC was with streamers (tape) from control line to "pizza box"flyers .

Best wishes and keep the photos coming .

Thanks Greg those are special. Yes I have to admit I'm pretty rough on the old pics. I love your Troublemaker. Geez Martin and Bonnetti had cool looking planes and they had the look the ladies liked too. Mike

Dan, your wish is my command: You ask for it,

These “not so good” photo’s, is the same plane I did show before in the other posts.

I did start pattern flying with it,

Other people do show several planes in one post, I have to do it with one plane in several posts (Dutch)

I did design the plane as tricycle plane you still can see in the b/w pictures, the mounting dowels of the mains.
Engine bearer one sheet of bended aluminum 1/8”.
And of course you guess, no “dead stick” but “lost stick”.

The first 3,5 CC (o.2?) Webra Glow Star did start his own business during one of the very many flights. Reason metal fatigue.
Because the Webra did take along an important part of the centre of gravity with it, it was one of my free flight experiments with this plane too.

I love wood!!!”The plane did survive no injuries.

The bearer you still see on the picture repaired with two pieces of L shape aluminum to make mounting of the glowstar possible again and later ST.
Later I could read, Ed Kazmirski, a few degrees down thrust or side thrust doe not really matter in efficiency of the engine, but the adjustment is very important for the pattern plane!

Yes Ed you are right and I did learn that too, but.
When my plane does look like a chopper when flying inverted, then there is a little bit too much power on the wrong place!!

More to come about this plane, but only if you like?

Cees

Thanks Mike,

My daughter, in the Lancer picture, is in her 40's now! Where does the time go? and.. thanks for the Sabre Stunt compliment Chris. That photo goes back to the early 60's. I'm putting my 6 year old grandson in my current photos.

Larry Ottflew with me in Hoffman Estates Illinois. He was like me a former president of the NSRCA a long long long time ago. He also was a Mode 1 flyer like myself so as you can imagine we were pretty good friends. I thought he was going to make a comeback about 8 years ago but I stopped hearing from him. Great guy. Thanks for the cool picture it means a lot. Mike

I really like the shot of Bonetti holding (I believe) his Intercepter. Too bad plans aren't available. Thanks for posting those wonderful pics!
