Default Electronics for an F3A Plane

Hi.
Which kind of servos classic pattern planes use? I mean torque, etc.
Which type of Futaba servos do you recommend me?
Thank you!
Regards,
Chino

Chino,

I suspect that Dave is pulling your leg. Kraft KPS servos haven't been manufactured for a very long time!

What are you building?

David.

That was a bit mean with the Kraft reply Although i`m sure he`ll see the funny side of it.

You haven't lived until you fly a Phoenix 6 with World S-5's. I think they made about 30 in/oz of torque.

I do get a kick out of folks having to have servos with over 100 oz/inches of torque just to sport fly .40 to .75 powered non 3D models. If they only knew what we had. The good old KPS-15, at least in one version, was good for 28 oz/inches of torque with a hot, freshly charged battery pack. Anyone remember installing the Giezendanner wipers and chasing the rat turds?

Sorry, I didn´t get the funny side of that answer...
I´m building a Curare.
Thank you.

No, thank you, Chino, for your fine participation in this forum.

I wasn't making fun of you, just the irony of how much things have changed in a few decades to some of we old farts. My apology to you for straying off-topic.

Chino - If you are building the Curare, find the Futaba equivilant to the JR DS821. Maybe you can use this servo with Futaba receiver, I am not an electronic's expert here. The DS821 can be used in all application's for the plane you are building. This servo is only $29.95 each, great deal for the money. You may get more answer's here why one servo is better then another.

The KPS-15 answer, maybe it is being used, I do not have any knowledge about that. There are guy's using old radio's with success, so he may be right, for vintage application's. Chino, you can also find someone in your area by posting a request for help close to where you live. Isn't there an RC club close to you ?

Most Classic pattern models are fine with standard servos

Good servos to use are Futaba S 3001's, S 148's are also a good servo

I am runing old S-28's in my Ugly stick and they work fine.

The FPS-148 servo is good if you install a ball bearing to take the slack out of the output shaft. These are still not the best for pattern flying, but they will do in a pinch.

Chino - Nothing fancy needed for these types of models. I find myself using the Futaba 3010 more and more as a "standard" servo. Good value at $25.

Yes, they will fly fine on the older stuff, but they do fly even better if you spend a little more and put a good digital on them. Good 70-80oz servos with a excellent centering still work best. I have a .40 size Great Planes Cherokee with all high performance digitals in it (because thats what I had) and it flies noticeably better than the one that is identical my father has except for the sport servos. We are using better TXs and RX's in this stuff, you might as well take advantage of the servos as well.

I run 9202s in mine. They are slop free, and last forever and not too hard on the wallet. I have used some of the base model Futaba Digital, and they work great, just a bit of slop on the output shaft bearings.

Here is the 2008 NATS equipment list. A couple years old, but you should get some good info:

http://nsrca.us/documents/nats/2008_...tion_Sheet.pdf

I just realized that you want classic pattern stuff. Ditto with the 9202's. Some of the basic digitals with similar torque would also work.

Default RE: Electronics for an F3A Plane

Chino,

What transmitter and receiver are You using?
If You have a rather new Futaba system that can take advantage of digital, and even brushless type servos if you prefer, that would be a good alternative. I have a handful of Futaba BLS153 servosand they are fine, lightweight, enough tourqe, can be used in both 4.8 and 6 volt receiver systems, are digital and brushless with metal gear. That is an example of Futabatop of the scale servosbut it is of course not needed in a classic pattern plane to have digital and brushless servos, metal gear etc. Since I have a Futaba TX and RX that can take full advantage of such digital brushless servo I tried so far the BLS153. So far so good. I use LiPo reveiver battery by the way with a PowerSystem electronic DigiSwitch as voltage regulator, voltage indicator and also to get rid of mechanical on/off switch.
Ball bearing servo is a good thing to have so check Futaba servo that has that and brusless motor (lastabout 5 times longer then brushed)is also good to have, metal gear is of course also nice to have and if you want digital servo (but they are more current hungry) to get better precisionyou can add that to the whishlist. Futaba S3050 has ball bearing, metal gear and is digital and is resonably priced (around $ 44 or so) and have good torque (72 oz-in 4.8V, 90 oz-in 6V) and reasonable weight (1.7 oz, 49 gram). If You have a Futaba radio with HS (High Speed) receiver you can take full advantage of digital servo to get even better frame rate (7 ms instead of 14 ms).So You have some alternatives to choose from, check Futaba US homepage servo section to read more if you need.

/Bo

PS. Back in 1970th I had an EK Logictrol super pro 7 ch (AM, 27 MHz) that had rather small red SM3P "Super-Mini" servo (no metal gear, no brushless etc of course) and they had a torqe of 28 ounce per inch (2000 gram per centimeter)and weight of 1.2 oz, 34 gram. I used these servos in both a Mach 1 and a Curare and they worked just fine (had Rossi 60 and 61 side and rear exhaust with pipe and retracts where I used a Futaba FP-S8, 8 kg/cm,high torque landing gearservo). The servos strangely enough never failed but I was extremely careful to mount them soft so vibration would not kill them. I still have the radio (but dare not to use it today in any airplane in the hostile 27 MHz band we have now with all the toys using 27 Mhz).

Thank you very much for all the advices, they are very useful.
Bem: I´m using a Futaba 7CAP 72 mHz. It has S3151 digital servos but I´m thinking that they doesn´t have enough torque for the ailerons and elevator.
NM2K: I´ts ok.

Default RE: Electronics for an F3A Plane

Hi,

Futaba S3151 has torque 43 ounce per inch and that is enough for aileron and elevator on a Curare 60. Weight 1.5 ounce (41 gram) is no problem either. I had, as I wrote, back in the 1970th a Curare 60 and servos with only 28 ounce per inch torque (that wasabout whatmany normal servos back then performed) and it worked fine, even in competion flying.

Thank youBem, I´m planning to buy a couple of S3152 for ailerons and elevator.

And what about the battery (mine is 600 mAh) but today the lipo´s has morecapacity via a ESC. I don´t know which is a “PowerSystem”, in other model Ihave I use an ESC in a way to convert the 11,1 V in the voltage rec and servosneeds.
Regards,
