Default T2A MK 4 INFORMATION NEEDED

Hi Guys,
I just found a T2A MK 4 that is up on fleabay I am going to try to get. Was wondering what would be a good engine choice for it. I have a NIB YS 110, would that be good or should I go with a 90 two stroke? Also anyone flown one of these?

Thanks
Ed

Hi Ed

I'm still flying the MK IV featured on the cover. I like the simplicity of the YS .61 Longstroke, trike gear set up. You will not be disapointed. Look at my post on pg 3 of classic Pattern. Date 7/25/10. Great flying machine...

I was just lucky enough to find a T2A MK 2 at a swap meet last weekend. Real nice, made by Carolina Custom Aircraft. Hope to start on it soon, but I am missing the templates for the bulkheads.

Ed, the T2A MK 4 flies great on an OS 91 Surpass 2 so that YS 110 should be even better. I went to look at it, hope you plan on paying a fairly good amount, don't see too many of those!

Ed,

You've gotten some good replies already it looks like. Tom designed this plane around the YS and OS (Hanno) 61s which were the engines to have in the day. It was intended to have the engine mounted inverted with an enclosed pipe through the belly pan. I made quite a few MK IVs after Tom quit making kits. Dan Hines of Carolina Custom took over from me in 2003. Dan still makes the kit and last I saw it was just under 300 direct from him. I don't know what wait time is but I think there is a wait(very nice workmanship though). People have powered MK IVs with all kinds of engines. A piped YS 61 2 stroke works well as BL said, I think the YS 110 or new 115 4S would be great but the fit will be a little tight. I would like to have a MK IV with a JETT 90 FIRE. I looked at the kit being auctioned now. It looks to me like someone has cut out the top of the engine compartment maybe thinking to mount an upright engine as was done on the T2A MK 3. MK IVs did not come with that cutout so that might be a concern. I have doubts Tom made that kit as I never knew Tom to use the white primer or the carbon tow I can see in that fuse. I can't tell much about the wing cores, looks like Obechi but I don't know who might have sheeted them. I don't think Tom ever offered a sheeted kit but I could be mistaken. Good luck, I think you will be happy with any of the T2A series.

Hi Ed,
OK I see someone else pointed out the engine cut out. Mine was done that way was using OS 95AX and a Jett muffler. It fit just fine in there, but that YS 110 would be a fantastic combination. As far as the pre-sheeted wing and stab cores, not sure who did them , but when I bought mine down in Perry GA two years back, it looked exactly as shown like the one for auction, right down to the bulkheads. The shipping label on my box was from GA in 1999. My fuselage was white, like a gel-coat almost, but no CF in the rudder. I strongly suggest you consider making it a fixed gear taildragger with nice wheel pants. Looks great, simple and a no affect on how it flew at all.

All I can say is it is a fantastic flying plane and if you need any help let me know. Unfortunately mine was too short lived. I lost mine this past spring, still not sure what happened. I was doing a humpty bump, and it never came out at the bottom and I had plenty of altitiude. I think the battery may have possibly unplugged , but will never know for sure.

David
