Hi all,

Could someon point me to plans or info like 3-view drawings of the Daloel. I just love the design. I think it was a model enginnered up to a full scale airplane....:)

The Dalotel is a french aerobatic aircraft it was around a long time before Hanno Pretner (The Best i ever saw.) made it famous to the R/cers of the world. I built one from Model Airplane News plans back in the 80s and i still have the plans after all these years (and i was out of the hobby for 15 years) It was the absolute best Pattern and sport plane i have ever flown. It would do knife edge loops all day long with no aileron input( no roll with rudder at all) and it would slow down to a crawl for landing,i have owned a lot of aircraft in my life (all kinds of pattern planes) and this is still the most impressive bar none. Here is a 3 view Dick Hanson sent me once.
Dick offered a very competitive pattern model in the early mid 80's based on this plane.
It was actually named "Viking" but every one called it by Michel Dalotel's last name.
In the early '80s Dalotel wrote to the EAA and asked for help finding investors.
The EAA published his letter which included a picture of the prototype in flight and specs
for various models which varied from fixed gear to retracts and horsepower.
I believe there was only the one prototype built.
If you contact the EAA in Oshkosh they may be able to supply you with a reprint of that article.

Here is the plan mentioned by Randy in his post. From MAN June 1982. Sounds like a great flier.

If you are interested I can scan and post the article and I also have some more Dalotel photographs/drawings if required.

I built this model back in the '80's as I fell in love with the Dalotel also. It is a great flying airplane! Retracts would be a simple addition (Mine was fixed gear). I started flying it with an OS .60 FS and changed to a small block ST .60.
An OS .70 Surpass would be perfect and have that scale sound! I still have my plans and who knows- I might build another one!

Here is my version of the Dalotel. Wingspan is 82 inches. Powered by a RCS 1.40 gasser. Century jet air retracts. Covered with Century 21 fabric. Designed with Autocad. The model has very accurate scale outlines. A great flying airplane. Suitable for scale or IMAC.

I've flown the TOC sized version with an HP120 inline twin and it was a good flying aerobatic airplane with no bad habits that I can remember:) (early 80's)

Hello Frank and all the others who love Dalotels! I am Obi Mapua, and after reading your posts, I am tickled pink that my design from 1983 is still very much alive! And what's more, you enjoy the way it flies. I was able to find one that I made, after 20+ years, from a modeler who was moving house. I bought it back from him, and then put in a new Thunder Tiger 46 PRO engine on it. When I flew it, I was shocked!! It had much more power than the 45s that powered my Dalotel 20 years ago! Lunar verticals, if you can believe that...The engines today have much more "oomph" in them. Sadly, I had to hang up my Dalotel, as flying a 20 year old plane is not really recommended. The glue and wood are so dry, that a bad jolt would shatter the airframe. After reading the thread, I am so tempted to "upgrade" the plan. I made a 61 version, and this was a nice flyer too. I am still actively designing model aircraft; my latest on the board is a Yak-55, foam cores are cut; this is a 2-meter airplane, to be powered by a ZDZ 40 RE. :D

Good to hear from the MAN plan designer. Yes, plans for the 60 size version would also interest me if available.

I don't wish to offend, but I don't think you got the fin/rudder shape quite right on the small one - or was that deliberate to improve its performance.

Also there was a David Boddington plan for a 48 inch Dalotel for 30-35 2 strokes or 40 4stroke published as a free plan in Scale Aircraft Quarterly Summer 1986

Dear Randy and Ray,

Thank you so much for your interest in the 61 plans (the plane would probably be competition competitive with a YS 110) but it's been a long time since I made those plans--by hand, the good old fashioned way--drafting (anybody remember this?). These days I work with CAD, specifically, DesignCAD. I can draw up a set of the 61 Dalotel plans, it might take a while, as I can do one of two things--trace over in CAD the original MAN plans, and scale up--not too hard to do, or, photograph the 61 Dalotel--one still exists with my brother--and then trace that. That route might be longer. I would like to send the plans via e-mails instead of rolled up in a cardboard tube. This is too expensive.

Yes the fin and rudder are "squished"--an error of mine as I couldn't get the right size from photographs of the Dalotel--the right profile didn't come till I saw a 3-view much much later. Don't worry, I'm not offended--although the fin and rudder of the 40 sized Dalotel were still OK in performance. (If I remember right, I was calculating the area--sort of--the fin and rudder to have about the same area as those of pattern planes) The 61's vertical tailplane is corrected, and looks much better. No downgrade in performance.

I would like very much to use a better airfoil and aileron setup. I hope you guys aren't in a rush, the Philippine Nationals is coming up, and I am joining the Senior Pattern event. Sadly, not with a Dalotel, but with another design of mine--a pattern plane. The Nationals are on April 11-13. I will keep you posted on developments.
