RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
Yes, Lacquer primer, Testor's rattle can. Never had that problem before.

Well, after a month off, I am back to work on this. Primer all removed, new coat of epoxy primer, wet sanded with 400, and this past w/e I shot the white. Came out pretty good, then I bumped the vertical stab tip (Grrrr). ALso had to adjust the wing saddle a bit, maybe you can see it in the photo. I will re-shoot those two areas when I re-do the wing (see next post). Since I will be clear-coating it, the overspray can be sanded out easily.

Yea, the wing. When I used the centering tool to mark the hinge slots, I dented the TE and didn't notice it. Auto glaze filled the depression, and I will re-shoot the wing hopefully this coming w/e. Photo is a bit off focus.
Now I am trying to think of a simple brake setup. In the past I've used fuel tubing on the gear leg as a friction device, that's the way I'm leaning now. Any better ideas? |

OK, I sneaked a bit of time on Mothers Day w/e (read - Saturday) and re-shot the white touchup that was needed. Looking good to me, but not a perfect job like 8178. Man, I take my hat off to him.
So tonight I assembled the wing to the body, and did a last alignment check of the wing to the stab, photo below. Luckily, it all looks good. |

Well, since it was assembled and all, why not get a good 3/4 view with the canopy (yes, the yellow one) and the fuel hatch in place. Damn, I can't wait to shoot color this w/e.

WEDJ,
Awesome looking plane![sm=thumbup.gif] Keep up the great work:D:D |

So I can't wait, I gotta paint!
Here's a couple of shots of the tail. I used Frisket paper folded double to cut out the design for both sides, then made sure there was enough area masked off to prevent overspray. The photos kinda tell it all. |

Very pleased with the result. Not perfect, but acceptable.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Moving on to the wing, I spent an hour masking it off, sealing the edges, etc etc. Went to shoot the paint, and found out that the Indigo Blue is sort of, well, translucent. Didn't notice it on the rudder (all white background), but on the bottom of the wing, which has yellow and some white bleed, it is painfully obvious that I can't let the paint stay this way. The only solution is to spray white over the yellow, then spray blue. A multi-day process which will add a couple of weeks to the end of this project. Damn! |
RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
I just had a nice conversation with the Klass Kote people, very helpful.
The Indigo Blue tends to have the pigment settle to the bottom. Although I shook the can for what I thought was enough, evidently it is not. It forms a sludge that needs to be re-incorporated for the paint to behave properly. At least I won't have to shoot white now. |
RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
The plane is looking fantastic!!! Keep the photos coming.
Some of Brodak's dope colors are that way, too. I also shook a can for ten minutes only to find that I still had to stir it with a stick. The solids in his primer really separate. I'm relatively new to spraying paint and I've learned 99.9% of what little I know from mistakes. By my 20th plane things should go pretty smooth.:D David |
RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
Checked the Indigo blue paint can when I got home tonight.
Sure enough, there was a significant amount of sludge in the bottom. Turned it upside down, shook it a lot, and will repeat the process tomorrow. |

Shake, Shake, Shake.....
Yea, and then stir, stir, stir, Shake, Shake, Shake..... etc. etc. Finally got all the sludge re-incorporated into the paint. Now the stirring stick comes out solid rather than "casper" style. So I'm as good to go as it can be. Mixed it up, let the paint "incorporate" per instructions, and sprayed away! The result is still a bit dependant on the base coat. I can accept this, but thank God most people won't look at the bottom, only the top. |

So let's talk about the top...........
I like the color, but it took about 10 coats of dusting to get here. Thank God there's an even white base to shoot on. Now the problem is the masking, I guess some of my tape, being 15-20 yrs old, didn't hold up too well. No matter, an Xacto blade and a touch-up brush will repair it quite nicely. Then there's the two spots where the tape I was taking off got randy and brushed against the wet paint (DAMN!!!) Again, I have a touchup brush coming later to fix that. I like the look of Yellow-White-Blue. |
RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
The blue, yellow and white do look great together. You do very nice work, Nick. Far better than I am capable of doing. Thanks for sharing the process with us.

RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
That combination of opaque color and translucent covering (like the original) looks beautiful. Great work.

Looking real nice guy. That's going to look hot in the air. That translucent yellow should glow when the sun shines through it. Keep up the great build. I can't wait to see her out at Salem. Peace Mark O |
RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
Nic, your "Bird of Prey" Perigee is totally cool! What an impressive build you have accomplished! I hope that you bring it to the event on the 31st, even if it's not ready to fly as I want to check it out! Now, it's time for me to get back on track with the Banshee!

well, at least last night I was able to mask off the fuselage. It takes longer to do that than to paint it. Hopefully, tonight the blue will go on. Notice the respirator in the first photo. The "bull horn" shape in white is hard to see, the frisket paper is pretty transparent.
Yes, She's coming on the 31st, even not finished yet. |

OK, shot some blue tonight. Really is kinda transparent, I took a few camera shots to show it. I am going to leave the masking on and shoot some more tomorrow. The end is in sight!
|
RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
That is an odd way for blue to act. Its almost like it is candy blue. I have used both the original K&B blue and the Ultra-poxy blue, and it was a two coat process provided you didn't miss any spots.
It still looks awesome. Makes me want to get my Original kit out and get to work! |
RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread

DISASTER!!!!!
I re-shot the transparent spots, and began to pull the tape off. The blue came off with the tape, in sheets! I guess the first coat stuck to the tape better than it stuck to the white. Never ever had that happen before. Now I will have to try and remove as much as I can, then I guess 400/wet sand some tooth into the white, then re-do it all. DAMN! |
RE: PassTime Perigee Build thread
[:@] Crap! Man I'm sorry to see that. Hang in there- this whole paint job has been a test of patience and perseverence from the beginning! Sure looking forward to seeing it done. BTW- I do plastics too and sometimes loose track of how many sandings and repaints before getting it right. Will be worth it in the end.
