Thanks again to BRUSTY for sending me a replacement canopy. [sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif] It didn't quite turn out like the last one, but I'm still happy with it.
I just need to do some wet sanding with some 600-800 grit before spraying the clear. I think I'll be done just in time for some good weather! |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Jeff,
I hope your daughter gets well soon too. HOLY COW, That is one beautiful Dirty Birdy you have there....[sm=thumbup.gif] I love the color scheme and the curves only seem to enhance the classic lines of the plane. Have you had a chance to weigh the plane lately? I'd really be interested in a final ready to fly weight when you get to that point. Keep up the great work ! ! ! You're on the home stretch now....:D David |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
That look great!! Don't put your paint guns away yet. . .the UPS guy will be there next week with my plane. . . I'll get it up to primer for ya!!
. . Excellent job!!! |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Thanks!
As long as you don't want curved lines anywhere on the plane, send it on.... :D Duplicating curved lines is a PITA!!! I do think it came out pretty good though. Pulling off the masking had me feeling like an 8 year old at Christmas! |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Looking good Jeff, I’m really liking the curved lines and your color configuration. It has a modern/classic feel, nicely done. Hope your daughter is getting better; I know how tough it can be. |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Thanks for the comments guys.
The design was a team effort between Chris (Cspaced) and myself. I'm really excited about how it turned out. BTW, my daughter is out of the hospital and back in school. Thanks for all the well wishes. You guys are great! [sm=thumbs_up.gif] |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Jeff,
I hope your daughter is doing better now that she's back with you and in school. When our kids are sick, they seem like such fragile things but are a roaring thunder when they're not! When my 4 year old daughter is sick (like now), my heart sinks so I can relate to your situation to some extent. Some time ago we had to take my 3 month old boy for a spinal tap at 3 am to insure he wasn't having brain swelling and I had to put my fist through some drywall to bring myself to do it - I was extremely worried. I held him there tight while the doctors did what was necessary - he was already very strong by then. Better days for all our kids... Keep us updated on the finishing stages of your very nice DB! David. |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Wow Jeff you plane looks Great!!
|
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Thanks David. Like I said, you guys are the greatest!
Unfortunately my daughter is back in the hospital. [:o] Crohns is a horrible disease and although she was doing pretty good for a couple weeks, it looks like she's not responding to the drugs as well as the doctors had hoped. The Dirty Birdy sits in the shop, wet-sanded and ready for clear coat. We still need to do a bit of wet sanding on Chris' Summit 3 and it will be ready to shoot as well. Hopefully I'll get a day or two to finish it and I promise that I'll shoot some photos as I finish the plane. |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Hey Jeff,
Any progress on your Dirty Birdy? David |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Is there a PDF of the plan? I have a 40 size and would like to build a 60 size. I could enlarge the plan I have if I had the 60 size wingspan. Anybody ?
|
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Very nice Jeff. I have thought about painting curved sweeping line's on a Phoenix. Looks great.

RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
I have a full sized jpeg of the DB and the UFO.

RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Can you post it or email it to me? I have the UFO.

Well, it's finally ready to fly. I switched from JR (9303 2.4) to the new Hitec Aurora 9.
Mounting the fuel tank on the centerline (right in the middle of the radio compartment) was more of a challenge than I originally thought. I ended up putting the receiver up in the canopy, above the fuel tank. The rx battery ended up in front of the fuel tank to get the plane to balance at the recommended CG. There are no suggestions for throws so I've eyeballed it for now. Final weight ready to fly - minus fuel is 8 lbs, 7.3 oz. I'm going to play with the engine over the next couple days then I'll post a flight report with pictures and video. |

Jeff, Do I understand you did mount the tank near the CG and not in the original tank compartment? I did not read anything about a pump on the Nova Rossi. If so I think you can expact problems with the mixture. Cees |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Hello Cees.
Yes, I put the tank on the C of G. I have added the Perry Pump. |

My pump set up is similar to this drawing. Item 9 is a filter and item 11 is a check valve.

RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Jeff,
Congratulations on finishing your Dirty Birdy. You did a fantastic job on the plane and the paint job speaks for itself....[sm=thumbs_up.gif] Good luck with your Maiden flight. It would be great if you knew someone who had a radar gun that could clock your plane in flight. I'd be curious to know how fast your plane is with that rocket mounted in the nose. Also, a big THANK YOU for taking the time to do this build thread. It is greatly appreciated by all of us...:D BTW, one more question. What's next........:D:D |
RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Jeff, what is next.
