RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Thanks David! I'm really enjoying do all these thing that I've always wanted to do.
Yes, I just took all the screws out popped the box apart, then popped off the original. And yes I did brush the inside with a bees wax and rubbed out the brush marks with TP. The material is a 2 part polyurethane, very easy to use and sets up rock hard. I'm not sure of the cost as it was given to me. It's also sets up very fast too. From pour to disassemble was about 45 minutes. Total labor to produce this plug was less then 3 hours. |

Updates!
Vacuum form is done and material is in. The first few pulls are good. Just a few tweaks! Here's also pics of the engine mount and tank installed. Foam cores will be here tomorrow. |

RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Chris,
nice work. What do you have in mind for the fuse front bottom? Are you going to sheet and then add CF? What particular type of CF are you using for the pipe tunnel and formers? Are you bonding it with epoxy? Is the SF45 cowl original you used any smaller than what is called for on the reduced 2500 plan? I would have thought the 45 cowl might have been a touch smaller than that called for on the 60 - not so? Looking forward to the core work. David. |
RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Thanks David,
I've not decided what to do with the front tunnel yet. I'll probably fill it in with balsa up to were the tunnel is then epoxy the tunnel in like I did behind the wing. I took one of the wifes old hairspray bottles, tacked it down to the bench so it wouldn't roll around, put some mold release on it, and laid the carbon on it just like glass. When it was done, popped it off and a perfect tunnel. The carbon I have is just a standard 5.9oz plain weave. Then next time I buy some it will be the stitched variety. The stuff I have is very tough to cut small pieces with out it falling apart. The larger flat pieces are not too bad though. I put some mold release on a piece of glass, wet out the area of the fabric, lay the fabric down & wet that out, then put the balsa or lite ply down and a thick board and weight. The next day it's a perfect carbon laminate. The originals SF cowl I used is almost the exact same size and the cowl in the reduced plan. As far as I can tell the two originals cowls, 45 & 60 are the same. In fact there is very little difference between the 45 and the 60 in relationship to the fuse. I think it's going to look very nice. |
RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Chris, Good work. Glad your still moving on it.

RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Chris,
how's the progress on the SF coming? Did you receive the cores? David |

Thanks for the comment Jeff and yes David I've been working on it. Just been lazy posting updates. Here's a new pic of the stab installed. I received the cores but the wing was not what I wanted so I had them redone. The new ones should be here Wed. along with the decks. I'll probably mock the whole thing together and take a pic.

Here's some updated pics. I received the new wing cores, decks, put it all together and set it out with the 45 Unlimited. I'm pretty happy about the project at this point.

RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Wow, looks good.
It still amases me that people would put a OS 1.08 into a supra-fly 45! |
RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Sweet looking Chris!
The cowl and canopy turned out great. It looks like you have a little sheeting work ahead of you. I've always enjoyed that aspect of working with foam. David. |
RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Chris-
Your project looks great! My recent experiences with the Calypso and fond memories of the Supra Fly 45 confirm that you will really like this model. The Calypso has about 20 flights and is truly a very special, under-rated model. Rusty Dose Team Futaba |
RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Any progress Chris?
David. |
RE: Supra Fly 60 build
Oh yeah, Like I said before I'm lazy when it comes to updates on here. It's coming along nice. I'll get pics up later. Decks are sheeted and installed, front pipe tunnel is in, fin is on. I've placed an order @ Central Hobbies for some hardware.

Nicely done Chris!
Don't be lazy and keep em coming! If not, how am I going to derive inspiration to finish the Calypso!? :) David. |

RE: Supra Fly 60 build
NIce, that reminds me, I've started building a pair of 50" supra fly "40"s, might have to do a build log.
|
RE: Supra Fly 60 build
I'd like to check that build out. Is that the Pilot kits your referring to or are you scratch building?
|
RE: Supra Fly 60 build
It's a scratch build.
I'm teaching one of the guys in my club how to build. He started this build going "I hate building, it's terrible" now all I hear from him when he's churning out a balsa wonder is "oohh" and "aaahhhh, thats so nice". I think I might have turned him SO there's two, one foam wing, solid surfaces, to be finished in silkspan, and mine, built up wing, built up tailplane in glass. Both are equally nice aircraft:) |

Well guys, one of the two supra-flys is nearly done, just needs it's decals and I'll call it finished.
OS 46fx, JR 700 rx 2 x 591's for elev and rudd 2 x hs85bb's for ailerons 1 x hs 55 for throttle. AUW- 1875g. It's a great little flyer, and tracks smooth just like her bigger sister :) |
