Well here are the idea's

Please choose the one you would like to see as the CPA logo.. Remember the logo will be getting Embroidered and silk screened on shirts etc. The top 3 will move to the next round...

I think I'm with Mark. Sorry for being a nag but I think there should be yellow somewhere - it is "eye appealing". I also think the font is worth thinking about as it "graphically" a very important element.

Greg, of course it all depends on whether you have the time and desire to experiment a touch further.

I like this one.

I think it will look good on promotional material, shirt’s, stickers, etc.

But I’d like to see a pipe on it also.

The Dirty Birdy is a very iconic Pattern ship, at least in my opinion.

If one of my submissions is selected, I'll "tweak" whatever the group agrees to.... (as long as it's not something I can't change). Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of a DB (or any other "classic" pattern airplane with a pipe). If that change is needed, I'll need someone to contribute an appropriate photo - (large - high quality).

sounds great. I'm sure it will turn out very nicely.

I also agree with Paul in that I think the layout should work well on promotional material.

I think it'll refine it a touch if the star and text colors are "eye dropped" to the colours of the aircraft. I find that "computer color" often looks synthetic - sort of too primary. If the color is picked from a real painted model of which a photo was taken (like your DB), the color will be richer, less primary and more natural. As a professional colorist, I can't help but notice these details.

We should be able to find a picture of a DB (or similar) with pipe and yellow! :D The tricky part will be getting the correct angle without distorting the 3D aspect ratio.

Actually,

just found something...

It might work if the grass is keyed out and the logo flipped (reflected) so that the star heads right rather than left. This will mean that it will likely reside on the opposite side of letterhead, T-shirts and what not but being "gauche" is kinda cool for a classic pattern association! [8D]

One other detail which needed to be finished on this bird was painting the canopy - it sorta looks unfinished to me. That should be relatively doable Photoshop work I think.

A profile view, or close to it would be best. We should chat a bit off line about your "colorist" background. I'm always interested in expanding my awareness of graphic art issues.

Let's see how the final vote goes. I'd hope there might be several possibilities of a "signature" bird for the logo. If there are, I'll provide an opinion from a graphic artist perspective, but the groups feelings are what ultimately matter most.

Your yellow and black color scheme is very high contrast and probably gives great visability in the air. Painting the canopy in Photoshop is a possibility. Does the bird still exist? (thinking about a possible reshoot at a more profile angle) Extracting the airplane from the existing background should not be a problem. My DB was sitting on the runway before I extracted it from the background.

Sure, would be glad to. However, I work with moving pictures (film/video) rather than stills - the nature of the beast is similar but not entirely since much in the way of graphics is built "in computer" while moving pictures are often real life (I only work with animation occasionally). Real life colors are heavily affected by light (so called luma) and so are our eyes - much more so than we are affected by color (chroma). That's why we can see light levels in the dark but little to no color. Mind you, without light, there's no color anyway.

To me, one of the things that makes graphics cool and "real" is the use of luma gradients (black shadows and white highlights) rather than the use of pure (monochromatic) color alone. This is what I was referring to by "synthetic colors".

If you look at the DB above, you can see it all over the yellow in particular (but the brown too) - mixes of black and white shadows/highlights giving texture to the surface. This also helps us perceive spatial dimension. It lends it a 3D character. But I'm aware it's hard to do this graphically - it's much easier when the sun is involved.

So much for that short comment... fortunately, this isn't a build thread.

Yea,

I thought about Matt's DB which is very nicely finished and of course is "fresh off the table". Unfortunately, it's rather hard to get rid of the "halo" kick off the white. If the plane was shot at the correct angle on a green background (any basic key color would do so long as it's not part of the birds scheme), it might work nicely. Is there a pipe on that bird? Have to look again.

Oh yea! Definitely.

Jeff, would you be able to shoot it from a little lower and place it on a richly colored green background - a tarp or a blanket. Even grey should work so long as it's not a color that's on the plane. Uniform surface is best - a nice patch of concrete or some such. It will make for a nicer background "pull".

Oh, and maybe gear up supported under the wing on your painting stand (we shouldn't see it right adjacent to the model)?

The grass background is not really a problem... nor is the landing gear. The angle is not quite what I'd like. If you could shoot another photo more nearly a profile view, similar to my Deception build view or the DB I used in the original submission, it would work much better. (Assuming CPA goes with this logo design, of course)

Here's another version of the logo that seems to be getting the most attention. It incorporates some of the suggestions. If this turns out to be the choice of CPA, we need to get this design finalized before I head out of town Sunday for a couple of weeks.
