Default Flying Thursday

John,

Inventory in the morning, and I'll fly in the afternoon if I don't go skiing.

AL

And yes, I don't know how to spell bannanaass . . . but they sure are temperature sensitive!

Default Winter

There's no-one here who wouldn't want warm all year long for flying - but the change is nice once in a while. We fly less and dress warmer - besides, I think we tend to have thicker husks on our "plants" around here, but I'm glad it's not like Eastern US or Central Canada where you need a string on your plane just to find it on the tarmac during the blizzard.

Default No winter flying for me

Winter is a building season mostly where I live.

Too many small moving parts, that require the dexterity of un-gloved hands for winter flying.

Default winter flying

Paul, I keep telling ya, your a fair weather flier!! You'll know who I is when you read this. I've made at least 2 flights per month, every month, for the last five years and passed the 400 flight mark (in one year) this year. I unofficialy hold the club record for most first flights of the year (Jan 1 traditional Frozen Finger Funfly). Three years ago I had the most flights for that year in Feb. Winter flying is not for every one, but I can't stand to go more than 2-3 weeks without making a flight and flight sims are poor substitutes. Kinda like trying to placate a heroine addict with beer, just doesn't work.

Default Placating

I agree

Beer is definately no substitute for heroine while flying . . .

Default Sticky servo

I have noticed only this winter that a Hitec HS300 servo on my combat gremlin seems to stick - or move really slow and awkward, like a car being started in first gear with the clutch let out too fast- somewhat "lurchy".

I've brought the plane in and let it warm up and the problem seems to go away. I'm not talking about real cold here - just 30- 35 degrees.

I'll replace the servo if i have to, but has anyone ever had this happen? Or have a fix? I don't think there is any lube to speak of that can harden up.

Default Holy cow!

Wow!

Looks like that photo takes the cake for winter flying - Incredible . . . Is that a high wing trainer and a combat both?

The high wing is a MOG from Birdworks.
The Delta wing is a Comet 163 from Daves Air Works.
It was cranking at about 30-35 Gusts that day.
It is cool cuz the combat gliders were really going ballistic.
Theres some more pictures on my webpage at the bottom.

Default THE LITTLE HOUSE

Thanks Joe,

Probably would have found it myself well into the new year if my eyes were open - now I know! So many features I'll have to start paying attention . .

That's quite a website - you are so lucky to have those hills nearby! We have flat land, and hills about 45 minutes drive but too well treed to do anything. I end up sloping off a 1 mile lond sandspit out into Puget Sound near Blaine, WA and it's tricky to say the least. It is about 80 feet side, with a road down the center and at low tide the top of the beach is about an 8 - 12 foot rise. But with a good wind honking, we can fly larger planes about 40 feet up - but it is skill testing going out over the water into the wind to turn.

Do you fly the big sailplanes? The winds aloft info got my attention.

We fly at the Woodrat site from late April through October.
At Woodrat the LZ(landing zone)is too rough forscale gliders.
Then in the winter months we fly the Anderson Butte area.
We randomly fly powered at our Agate Lake R/C site.
Web page is http://www.rogue-eagles.com
We also tow gliders and drop skydivers. My boys have built sky divers that free fall-open their chute-cut away-open the second chute and steer down.

OK Ladies..... Hike up your skirts! Not only do I fly in the winter here, I am learning to fly a helicopter! Have made two flights so far, the second in a brisk wind.

I have enjoyed an occassional winter flight. I have a good tip to keep your hands warm while flying in the wind. Get an insulated double toaster cover in the housewares dept. , sew a two inch piece of velcro at the center of the bottom opening, poke a hole in the top center. Insert you transmitter with the antennae poking out the hole, close the velcro in the center, now insert your hands, Warm as toast (pun intended) the wind will not stiffen your fingers as you fly.

Wow... Many chickens here..

I don't mind flying when the ground is white, i don't mind flying with a little wind, and the skies are usually overcast when i find the time to fly..

I used to fly light-UAV's (for anti-aircraft-artillery-training) and at one time i flew 1 hour with winds varying between 25-38 knots with the temperature at -2 Celsius! Twice! That was the most fun i ever had! Not only are you freezing your jewels off, but you still have to fly the damned thing AND dodge all the bullets!

Now thats fun!

I've also been flyeing these UAV's in the Norwegian mountains with blue skies, no wind, and the temp at -28 Celsius! The only problem was keeping the fuel and oil from seperating in the can...

Now that the uniform has been turned in for good, i'll just enjoy the hobby. I'm very active with fixed-wing models during the winter, and i'll start learning to fly heli's on my new Sceadu 30 within a couple of weeks...

I just love the snow... Fresh snow is great for any unplanned events...

Hey John, I know it took me awhile to post, but was that post pointed at anyone in particular? I know I don't fly for all the reasons that Al listed!! Some might call me a weanie, but I like to think of it as smart enough to come in out of the cold!!! I also like to think of it a s a good time to stock up on planes I will crash throughout the rest of the year!!!!

I am not a great flyer to begin with, if I sat around two or three months waiting for warm weather I might loose what thumbs I have, I had rather freeze them off than do that. James Goss
