Default Windfarms

Hi,
A planning application as been lodged with the local council for a windfarm about 600 to 800metres forward from our pilot's stance. I'm looking for any info regarding turbulence or electrical emissions from these things. Any other examples and experiences gratefully received.
best regards
Tom Laird

I will tell you what I know about these things. They are 400 feet tall from top blade tip to the ground. They build many of them close together, but in Montana they do it where the wind blows constantly. The blades are over 150 long each, and they are usually three bladed. The blades are made of carbon fiber, at least they are here.

I don't know directly if they will cause radio interference from the electrical output, but I doubt they will. They put them right in the middle of residential areas in the US.

Wow, you grow wind up there? Is that what you use to power all those bagpipe thingies?

At only 600m to 800m from the front of your pilot station? ( about 2500') My biggest worry would be on trying to not to hit the thing. The ones they design in the US have all the electric lines underground so there shouldn't be any concern there. The vortex from the blades also would not be a concern since it requires about 35km/h to get the blades turning enough to create drafting, which is quite windy for normal flying conditions.

Add another 45m(2) for the blade length and you don't have much room to fly in without hitting one.

800m is almost a half mile. I can't see the plane that far away. The field where I fly after work has housing developments a little over a quarter mile away. I fly a 100" Corsair, a friend with a 138" B17 has no trouble staying within the confines.

What are you flying? I'm doubting you'll notice any induced turbulence.

Good luck,
Dave Olson

Chuck, we grow wind in Minnesota too.

Fortunately for us, Bagpipes are illegal in this state.

Unfortunately, Lutefisk is not!

BTW, they say that Bagpipes and accordions are the only musical instuments that can double as a bullet-proof vest - or, for that matter NEED to!

Pics from family vacation. Stopped by Owen Sound Ont. to watch them unload blades from Denmark. When they unloaded the nacelles from the ship it would lean over to the side. The crane in the foreground on the ship (bow) was turned each time to counteract the weight transfer. I think the nacelles are around 120-130 tons. Very cool. I don't think you'll have no problem flying in the vicinty of the windmills.

Grinder.

Mental note to self, do not play near military installations without invitation.

This mornings's paper had an article about the greenies complaining that the wind farms could injure birds. These people seem to want to cook over open fires and walk every place they go. I've seen some wind farms up close and never noticed a pile of dead birds at the base of the towers.
I think they are an ugly sight on any horizon but geting closer to being an absolute necessity. Since the wind is what makes them turn I doubt that there is a suction from the front that would draw a model into the blades. So far our area has been spared the sight of the monsters. They are huge.

True. But having been near one, I wouldn't want to fight the turbulence on the leeward side....
