RE: Don Muddiman Flying Machine
I just weighed the YS 45 combo(motor, header, pipe) at over 18oz but under 20oz(the header and pipe are still in their plastic wrap). The OS 55AX comes in at just slightly under 18oz. The 55AX would shift the CG a bit forward compared to the YS 45 since the 55 has a muffler and the YS would have the pipe under the fuse. But I would imagine the receiver batt could be shifted aft to ofset this. The 55AX install and tuning would be less hassle than the tuned pipe install and adjust using the YS. Anyone have experience with either of these setups? I have been flying another 55AX in a couple of planes over the last two years and it seems to be a good performer. In the Flying Machine, I would imagine one would be trying to get higher rpm with a smaller dia. prop versus a larger dia. slower turning prop.

RE: Don Muddiman Flying Machine
mine has an O/S .46 and a macs pipe (Short, not tuned pipe) and you can get the weights on the web from both of those and figure......I had to put my 6V 2000MaH battery ALL the way back to avoid having to add weight (See earlier post where I cut a hatch in the left side of the fuse behine the servo's and wing)
So I am in the position to think any combo heaver will just increase wing loading, require tail weight to balance and end up being a wash.....the .46 size is pleanty of power.......I run a 9.5X6 or a 10X7 and it rips........

If anyone is building one of Don's short kits and wishes to share pictures, ideas, etc. go to this RCU build thread that I started in the Kit Building forum, http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10...m.htm#10127486 . The kit building thread is not to take away from participation in this Q&A thread, but perhaps building the kit would be more appropriately followed in Kit Building.

I agree 100% and I am subscribed to both!
I am about to buy a short kit myself....

Nice plane '88! I like the graphics. I did my first one with the "Eddie Van Halen" guitar theme (Different size stripes of every color going everywhere) over the neon Green monokote (sorry, can find a pic). But this one will be different. Nice checkerboard though......

Hey, what do you have in that beast anyway? Looks like something special, maybe a Jett? Whatever it is, how is the flight performance? Has is seen air yet?

Very cool. I had a Rossi 45 in mine, and it was ballistic too, but I don't think it was that fast........now you got me thinking!!!!!!!!!

RE: Don Muddiman Flying Machine
Nelsons are no longer made, but they come up often on EBAY. You would want the Q500 motor, as the timing of the Q40 motors won't let you spin a big enough prop.
I sold many of the Short Stroke Versions (which would work perfect for this application) for between $150 and $200 there, very sad as they were all good engines, just not competitive with the Long Strokes which were a bit more powerfull.
I have a Nelson .50 sport Motor that I have never run, you guys are giving me ideas... I was going to go light with my Jett .35, but this could be interesting.

RE: Don Muddiman Flying Machine
Looks like the link to buy the short kits has been removed. Just e-mail Don, I am sure he will let you know. I think he ordered about a dozen kits to sell though his website, and when they were gone, they were gone. He will probably do it again when the interest is there, or at least, thats my guess. He probably just doesn't want to be sitting on a bunch of short kits unless he has enough buyers lined up.
