best way to repair Pitts Muffler
OK. I hope I'm posting in the right forum. Due to a slight misjudgement, my Chipmonk landed a little short of the runway. No major damage, ( landing gear ripped off, some severe "rash" on bottom of wing, & a busted "Pitts" style muffler. It didn't destroy it,but just took both exhaust pipes off at the muffler. It didn't bend the muffler & it didn't really bend the pipes. The pipes will fit right back into the muffler & all I have is what looks like a small crack where they were pulled out. What is the best way to fix it ? J-B Weld, solder, silver solder,or what? Thanks in advance for any & all help.

RE: best way to repair Pitts Muffler
You have to put the jb weld on fairly thick or the vibration will rattle them off.
The best fix (or preventative) for a pitts muffler is to cut the stacks fairly short and then attach silicon exhaust deflectors. I have had very good luck with this without any noticeable difference in the performance of the engine. You can also twist the deflectors so that they exit at different angles to better fit your cowl. When you have a nose over the deflectors bend and the impact isn't directly on the stacks.

Go to this thread. He just did a repair using alumaweld rod. Worked for him.
