Default What is it?

Hi Gang. I fly r/c and am renewing c/l flying at our field. OK. Got an arf (not my game, but don't have allot of time) Smoothie, and am enjoying the experience again.
Now the question. One of our members saw the Smoothie and the next week he brought out this. Any ideas as to what it is,and-or what class of OT events it might have been used. Hope the pics come out OK.
Thanks in advance.

Oh. The engine is McCoy 60 rear intake.

I don't know the plane, but I know that field, and I didn't know anyone else flew control line in this area. If I'm not mistaken, that's the Chatham County field off of Hwy 17 - am I correct?

It looks like a McCoy 60 on an old speed plane. Good for well over 100 mph in the 50's and early 60's. About the only place you still see the event flown is the AMA nationals in Muncie. The current speed record for this displacement is close to 200 mph. The designs often have very long inboard wings to minimize the actual line length as the control lines at that speed often have more drag than the airplane itself!

Yes. This is the field you called out. As I said, I am flying some C/L here, and hope more people will come out and join in. I am president of Tri County R.C. Flyers, and alot of the guys never seen a control line plane fly, so when I fire it up, they watch. Probably waiting to watch an old fool crash. But after a good flight and safe landing, it takes about 5 minutes to get the smile off my face.
