Survey-Youngest to Oldest Pilots

RE: Survey-Youngest to Oldest Pilots
I started during my last year of college. My nephew was, at one time, the youngest sponsored heli pilot in the US (by JR at age 13). He was the youngest holder of an AMA turbine waiver at 14, but he only had a DF of his own at that time. His Yellow A-4 made it to the inset pic on the cover of Model Airplane News!

I started with a rocket when i was maybe 5, and then I started when i was 7 with a 40 size trainer with a .46 engine and i'm now 14. I have my uncle to thank because he's the one who had me over every weekend during the summer to fly planes and he took me to shows, (I will never forget the 50% sukoui at one of the shows)

I started when I was about 10-11, I really don't remember. It was in the 5th grade regardless. My first plane was a Great Planes spirit that a B-52 pilot taught me to fly with...well, actually he had so much fun that I only flew it for about 5 minutes. It was great none-the-less to see something that I had built fly though.

I built my first model when I was 7 or 8 (1970 or 1971) with the help of my dad, a guillows Piper cub. Then after a few years of building rubber free flights, I got into control line combat. Then high school I was to busy playing sports & chaseing girls I sort of left the hobby. In 1990 I got back into the hobby flying & crashing a bunch of airplanes, Don't try to teach yourself to fly R/C!!!!!!!!!!!. It gets expensive. I then hooked up with a great bunch of guys at the Po' Boys Proptwister R/C Club in Monroe NC. With the help of these great guys I finally learned how not to crash so often. I flew for about 5 years with them. Got out of the hobby again to Drag Race motorcycles with my brother. I'm now 43 and back into the hobby again with my sons helping me build some small electric planes to fly in our front yard. 700' X 200' all centipede grass.
I love to scratch build. I Have always been a better builder than flyer. I hope to keep sons who are 7,5 & 3
out of future trouble by introducing them to this excellent hobby.

I started rockets at like 8 or so early on. Later, moved on to a .40 Xtra Easy trainer, but didn't have the time or money to drive to the field, so I got a Soarstar and I fly it in my backyard ( We have a hundred acres ). Now, I'm currently building a runway to fly that .40 trainer on back there. Yep, 18 and loving the hobby all the way.

i just started a year ago, when i was 13. i had always wanted to fly rc, but i didn't have the money. i worked my paper route for a few years to buy my first plane, a GWS DHC2 Beaver. it flew nice at first till i'd crashed it a few times. i kept trying to buy repair parts and stuff to make it fly better, but from all the glue it is really heavy and doesn't fly to nicely any more. right now i'm still scroungin up my money to keep the hobby alive

I was about 5 when my dad got into it.. i only got to fly the thing once at that age, but it was airborne and about 400ft up and only for about 30 seconds.. does that count? if not, then about 11ish.

I started when I was 14, with a sky screamer, flew it awhile, then got stuck in a tree. Took a break for awhile, but i NEEDED TO FLY, I then blew all the money I had saved caddying to buy a PZ J-3 Cub. Now I'm 15.

RE: Survey-Youngest to Oldest Pilots
I started in 1977 when stationed in California. Unfortunately, the ship underway and patrol schedule prevented me from spending a lot of time (in fact, very little time was spent) so I dropped the sport. I retired from the US Coast Guard in 1977 and started flying RC about two or three years later. I'm now 59 and flying pattern, electrics, and several sports models, having a lot of fun doing it. I only wish I had more time when I was younger, but my job and the 'needs of the service' prevented that.

I flew a kit 4ch bi-plane at 6 and kept flying on an off basis, then got my commander 2, scout then cub.
All of which are down now, but the cub is about to live again.
Commander is waiting for Christmas for parts and the scout is waiting until I find the packaging tape.
Now I'm 15, 16 in a month.
