Certainly almost as stupid is that he didn't even bother to check for it. It was his ride and he taught himself how to start it up but didn't bother reading to the "Must unlock Cyclic before takeoff" section.
This guy knew just enough to be dangerous.

Did you notice the guys name was hog. I thought pigs were supposed to be as intelligent as humans.........which i guess isnt sayin much after watchin that. It's amazing he only splattered the chopper and not himself. I thought I've done some pretty stupid things in my day, but never got myself nicknamed hog, and never tried to fly a heli.

how many of us have done this with a RC heli or plane? flown coz the instructor was late, or busy, or just got a plane way beyond what we can cope with?
i'm not talking self taught, thats diffrent.
i did have a student fly his cub without me coz i was tied up for a few mins, thing is he did ok, lucky he was about to and ready to go solo, he did propperly next flight.
and no bashing anyone that did.

I remember that crash....The guy had just retired and had always wanted a helicopter. He purchased that one for $25000, all of his retirement savings (this was 1987). He had one lesson the day before and on this day his instructor was late getting to the field so he thought he just hover it while waiting...unfortunately he didn't know to release the friction locks! As you see he managed to get it in the air but had no control. The person filming it knew he had no experience and had grabbed his video recorder out of his car in anticipation of the inevitable crash. And no...he had NO insurance on it...he was uninjured but the helicopeter was a total loss.

I like to know who the other idiot is that is taking the video, and letting him try to fly it? The FAA can't take his ticket because he more than likely don't have one to take. Good thing he didn't hit the other planes around him. Gary

i know a guys who just flew thru some power lines a few weeks ago, he was fired from my school, he will never instruct here again. but he was a really good pilot, i am unsure if he was flying or if it was his student. someone wasn't paying attention and they cut up the wings pretty good. landed at the closest airport, removed the wires, and flew it back.
i bet the FAA will pull everything, but will let him reapply for it all.

I flew better
My brother is a heli flight instructor with 2000+ hours. I flew with him. My previous "experience" at that time was about 4.5 hours in gliders, lots of years of RC planes and and helis. And a lot of PC simulator on heli and planes.
Let me tell you two things:
- The simulator is nowhere near the real thing
- I could _immediatly_ hover the Schweizer 300 we flew - thats the same heli that was crashed in the movie.
My hover wasn't pretty, but i did hover it 5 meter above the ground, and my brother didn't need to correct me even once.
So if this guy has 500 hours of FW, he must be a *really* lousy pilot.
After about an hour of practice, i took off from the practice area, flew the heli back to the airfield, landed and taxied back.
My brother and his friends were *very* impressed...
Let me tell you two things:

The problem with todays world is that the lawyers tend to take the idiots side and prove to courts that idiots need large amounts of money in order to compensate for their stupidity. Like I'M A MORON SO REWARD ME FOR IT.
I'm surprised the instructor isn't being sued by the idiot, plus all the plane owners that had damages caused by the wreck. Hell, even the guy videotaping could sue for being traumatized. The FAA deems the person in the left seat as being fully responsible for all actions involving the aircraft, but courts have a funny way of distributing the blame after an accident.

actually ive heard stories about a guy around here who
had 0 time but lots of cash and bought a chopper going
to teach himself to fly it ,he did manage to get it several hundred
feet up ,both doors somehow got jettisoned on way up,hitting ground before helio did .always a good idea to wait untill youre

The said part is, in today's society we seem to have stupid people in command and in charge...thus they want even dumber people below them. Thus, the people making the money to afford such lavish toys are stupid and uncaring to the people around them. IE A. This guy. What a jackass. He could have killed someone else, and probably has a family that at least partially relies on him. Proof again that only stupid people are breeding..
