Hi,
I have just purchased a Canon 850i digital camcorder. Although I can transfer stills and low resolution footage from the cameras SD mnemory card to my PC through a USB cable I can't transfer any video using this link. Is the firewire connection the only way to send digital video to my PC?
Thanks for any help
Lang

Thanks lcacciatore and J_R,
This information is very helpful and hopefully I can pick up the right Firewire card in the next week or so.

Look for a kit that contains the cable and the card. If you don't you may pay more for the cable than the card.
Also note how many pins are necessary on the camera, for the cable. Firewire generally comes with either a 6 pin to 6 pin cable, or a 6 pin to 4 pin. All cameras I have see use the 6 to 4.

Thanks again,
I have purchased a firewire card and editing software (Pinnacle Studio Plus, Version 9.3.0) and have made some flying videos...excellent. But another question can anyone tell me what format is typically used for flying videos on the net?

If you mean videos on a site that others can watch/download then usually they are in Windows Media Format or wmv.
With Studio 9 you can play with the frame rates when it comes to "Make Movie" time for higher or lower quality.
My stuff is all wmv except for whatever I plan to burn into a DVD movie. I save those in MPEG format for later in addition to the wmv streaming videos.

Yeah firewire is the quickest and best way to transfer footage to the pc. If you have a realtime capture card in your pc, with rca connections, then you could capture the footage that way, this is however the expensive way, as realtime capture cards with analog inputs are quite expensive. I have also noticed that allot of sites are using MPEG format now

most net videos use WMV format or Apples .mov (quicktime) formats for the net. also most editting software will have an internet setting when you are outputing to a file.
