Default Crash Damage

I have a Blade SR Helicopter that crashed fairly bad today. I completely bent the shaft on the tail motor along with bending the main shaft and busting the main gear.I powered up the engine after I crashed it to make sure everything electronicly worked ok. The servos seemed to move fine and the main motor seemed to work fine. However,Ismelt a burning smell after powering it up. A crash wouldnt have messed up the main motor would it? Or what could this smell me coming from.

Have you checked the battery? Is it swollen? Did you try to spin the motor or just ensured that it connected? Could the motor be rubbing against something? Is it an electric or rubber burning smell? Is the ESC or receiver getting hot? Perhaps the bent shaft of the tail motor caused internal damage to that motor. Cut the wires or desolder that motor since you will have to replace it, and try again. You will eliminate one thing at least.

After taking a closer look at it, there is a black burnt spot on the ESC. Does that mean this is shot? What would have caused it to burn like that? The tail motor will not spin at all, but that may be because the shaft was badly bent. I have it disconnected now.The helicopter is completely dissasimbled except for the electronics. I have an extra main shaft to put in it, but Iwill wait to see if my ESC is shot.

There could have been an overload on the ESC when the tail motor failed.

Is there any way I can test to see if my ESC is bad? I just replaced most of the other broken parts and put everything back together. The tail motor does not work, but it was also badly damaged during the crash, so that could be the problem there. The main motor works fine.

So if everything seems to work such as motor speed from stick input, then the ESC might be ok. You also mentioned that the servos work and i assume you can bind with the receiver. Gyro light is also on? I don't know how else to test the ESC. A meter might help. You may discover that under load, the ESC will fail...
