Default ESC programming prob for CPP

OK heres what Ive done. I had a Blade CP, bought the 3 in 1 and RX and turned it into a Pro. I kept the CP TX because I dont want to fly inverted and such so I dont need the extra channels etc.

I just upgraded to the brushless Eflite motor and ESC. Ive always used Thunderbird ESCs that program themselves upon arming and have 0 exp. with any other brand.
1st Q is what exactally does the ESC brake do and how do you use it??

2nd Ive tried programming the ESC as described in the manual on Horizons site BUT, youre supposed to raise the throttle to full, then plugin the ESC and wait for the beeps. But its not beeping with the throttle raised full. Im guessing its because the 4 in 1 wont arm when it senses the throttle is full.

If anyone has any experience with this Id love some help so I can actually FLY my heli.

I also just bought a Spektrum DX6 so if I cant get the CP TX to program the ESC for me then maybe I can program it through the Spek' .Is that posible??
I would rather be able to program through the CP radio

Well I was sitting here reading the pamphlet that was packaged with the ESC and it says the ESC comes set default with Auto lipo and brake off right from factory so I guess it isnt such a programming issue.

Id still like to know how the ESC is supposed to be programmed when the 4 in 1 wont allow it. Maybe the motor needs to be unplugged?? Guess I need to do some raeding up on these ESCs that need to be programmed.

Still like to know what the brake is used for as well even though I wont be using it.

Well it appears that Eflite is full of sh#t The ESC does NOT have brake off because when I idle down, as the headspeed decreases the rotor suddenly stops as if a brake has been applied , which in turn makes the heli rotate almost a full turn because of the torque. Not good. I really need to find out how to program this ESC .

the brake option is never used on a heli as the power generated for stopping the motor will cause the teeth to be ripped off the main gear from the inertia of the rotor blades.
Why is it an option? only thing I can think of is for a plane,as the prop is turning the same speed as the bell sometimes as much as 10,000 rpm +.
you should be able to program the esc by placing the throttle stick at full than plugging in the batt to the heli(no need at all since it's correct already) as the esc gets plugged straight into the rx section and the safety features are in the esc section of the 4in1

For some reason I cant get the ES to go into programming mode. Im thinking its the 3 in 1 preventing this but never programmed 1 before. Im getting real pissed at this thing. Horizon should have support on programming the ESC on a CP Pro

I had the very same problem with the esc and stock transmitter. You will need to reverse the throttle on the transmitter. Switch the botton labeled THR from reverse to normal. Do this with everthing off. Once you change this, the throttle will work in reverse. So throttle stick up will actually be off. Turn the transmitter upside down if you get mixed up. After this is done, you will be able to program it. Hope this helps.

I had the very same problem and horizonhobby could not figure out. I played around, switched the throttle and it worked.

I knew it had to be a prob with the 3 in 1 not allowing to arm but theres NO WAY I wouldve figured out that fix. Thats some good thinkin.

Programing esc's is basicly a standardized function.
If the esc is at full throttle the esc knows you want to change the preprogramed values stored in the PIC (micro computer).
If the stick is off idle but not full throttle the esc won't arm for safety reasons(be careful here as there has been some instances where the esc was designed incorrectly and at battery change the capacitors in the esc stayed charged and the esc(PIC) wasn't fully powered down and if you bump the throttle stick before the new batt gets plugged in the esc thinks you want throttle,so once the batt gets connected it fires up the motor.Best thing to do is have your throttle at bottom stick "AND/OR a throttle hold set for 0%/throttle cut set for 0% enabled at battery connection"(this only applies if you have an aftermarket tx)).

Ive only ever used Thunderbird ESCs before. As soon as you plug the battery in the ESC determines battery type (lipo) cell count (11V 3 cell) and sets a cutoff based on the 1st 2 readings. I really like them and the only reason I went with the Eflite is because I wanted to stay with the recommended setup. But with that new info youve provided Ill probably be trying out different brands now. Although Ive had amazing luck with Eflites brushless motors and will probably stay with their brand mostly.

I've tried this uning a Futaba 6EXH Tx and R146iP Rx and cannot get my ESC to arm or enter programming mode. (works just fine in the E-Flite 'el cheapo').

Any further ideas on this?

You may have to go into the endpoints for ch3.when on low stick change the endpoint to where it will arm, when on the hi stick change the endpoint to where it will allow programming.Don't forget that if it wont go into programing you must unplug the batt and reconnect before you will see a change on the hi stick endpoint adj. for programming access.
