Default battery packs exploding

Hey guys I couldn't find the right place to post this but I'm sure I can get the help I need here. I recently purchased an RTF raptor w/ a 3000 NiMh battery pack. Asked a buddy if I could use my futaba transmitter charger to charge it up and he said ya so I did it. Connected it to the reciever a few hours later and the wires melted like crazy, then it burst into flames. I managed it take it off the heli w/o burning myself. So now I thought my buddy had no idea what the heck he was talking about. I then got a few old trusty 600Mah NiCd packs w/ their charges. Used one of them fine till it ran out of power, then taking the other one right off the charger I checked it w/ a volt meter at .5A. Then I checked it at a 2A load for a few seconds for s**ts and giggles(I'm thinkin that was the mistake). After I connected it to the reciever the same thing happened...Anyone know what the heck the problem is? Thanks in advance.

Something in the battery-receiver system is backwards. Or shorted.

You're definitely plugging the batteries in backwards.

did I understand you connected a 3000 pack into the receiver on an electric heli and not into the speed controller?
