I have a new Ascent on the way to me which will be my second RC model. Other than the stock Speed 400 motor, an existing 25 amp ESC & a Futaba 2.4Gb radio that I already have, I will be putting together a control & power package for it from scratch.

What would be a good Lipo battery pack, servos & prop for it? I'm not interested in blistering climb speed or aerobatics, just a good performing park flyer E-glider. I have a Triton Jr charger which will charge Lipos but I believe I'll need a cell balancer as well. What cell balancer would be a good value?

At a later date, I'll probably transition to a brushless out runner motor. I would like my initial package to be compatible with this upgrade as well. I know a different ESC will be needed - but which one?

This will take out the motor fairly quickly, but I really think you need a 3S LiPoly in the 1350-1500mAh range to achieve an acceptable level of performance with a 400 motor. Ideally, you'd want a 9.6V NiMH, and a 2S LiPoly will leave you a little short.

I just came in from flying my Ascent here in the Great White North. Here's what I have and am very satisfied with the performance I get.

Razor 400 (brushless) direct drive with Graupner 6-3 folding prop (I added some right thrust), a Phoenix 25 brushless controller, and a 1250 2 cell Lipo battery. Takes off and climbs like crazy on 50-75% throttle. I've never tried 100%- it doesn't need it. I get good long flights with this setup.

BTW mine came with a big warp in one wing that gave it some interesting flight characteristics until I straightened it out. Flew great after that.

RC Kowal..a name from Michigan which intrigues me!!!My flight instructor at Grosse Ile in 1943 was Ensign Kowal..originally from Iowa, I believe.!
All 5 of my Ascents use 6/3 CAM folding props & Nimh or Lipos . With 8 Nimh I can get 60 minutes of LOW throttle flying. Li-pos are as good or better.
I modify mine with all-flying horiz stabs..and Rudder placement ahead of stab.
I think this is best sailplane for the money. All wings, tail, stabs MUST be free of twists & warps or you have a wild ride!!!

Hi...I am considering the EFlite Ascent or the Goldberg Electra. Any thoughts on which would be good first glider? I have lots of time with GLO planes and want a glider that will thermal well as well as be easy to transport and durable enough to handle landings on our field's hardpan runway. Thanks!

would a himax 4200 make a good job on this ascent?
