Hyperion LiPo's. Are they good?
#1
I attended our club swap meet this weekend and found out about a new LiPo that can be charged very rapidly (5C?). I have been using 4S 5000 mAh Blue LiPo's but they have been taking 90+ minutes to charge. I was told about Hyperion LiPo's and being able to charge them in as little as 15 minutes. Does anyone have any experience with Hyperion?
This also brings up another question: chargers! To charge a 5000 mAh battery at 5C would require a charger that can put out 25 amps! Is there such a charger? It may be pointless if my chargers max is 5 amps.
So, what do you all know?

I use them, another fellow in my club has had EXCELLENT results with them. He charges them at 5C has had no problems. I have used Hyperions from the git-go with no issues to report. Well worth the bucs imo. Fwiw, R/C country (61st and Folsom Blvd in Sacto) is having their semi-annual swap meet this weekend, May 1. Lots of goodies to be had there.

I spend about $55 on Blue 4S 5000 mAh from Hobby Partz. About how much can I expect on the Hyperions? I wonder if I'd be able to pick some up at Castle AFB Memorial Day Weekend?</p>

I use a Hyperion eos720i net3. Pricey, but I have only needed to buy one of them. will do up to six cells. Check prices at www.rcdude.com/ Free shipping when purchases are over $100.00.
I have done biz with him.

Okay, doing some more research... looking good so far! Now, what do you power this with? Will a wheelchair battery supply enough power to charge at 5C? For charging at home I can probably obtain a 24 VDC 20A linear power supply from work.
By the way, thanks for the help! I was almost getting ready to go back to gas for the larger planes. Whew!

The guy in my primary club charges his LiPo batteries on two 12v deep cycle marine batteries. If you can get you hands on a 24v ps, you will be in fine shape. Steve tells me (and it is so) the Hyperion chargers work with voltages from 12 to 28v. I wish I had a power supply like that. Fwiw, take look at hyperion's web page (and how-to manuals) to see their voltage requierments.
Hoping the above is helpful,

Yep! That's all good info. Thanks for the help.
As you may be able to tell, I'm still new to the electric world of RC's. I flew nitro about 30 yrs ago. I'm getting back into the hobby because of electrics.

The guy Steve, he flies a 25% Edge with two 6s 5000 Mah batts, just short of 50v at 5 amps! I have seen his plane go very near vertical with only a (at longest) twenty foot rollout. You will like the linearity of power that's available in electric flight. I do.
He also uses the new Hi-voltage servos, they sound like cb caps popping when he hits the sticks extra hard.
To go on for omoment: he was flying at the site with a wind of 15-18 mph from the south. Took off, went straight up. Hi altitude ws 80 feet or so, he backed down the power to where all of sue ther coudl see how r-e-a-l-l-y slow it was turning. Elevator was 45 degrees plus, Steve popped the power occasionanly, five of us on the ground had our jaws drop as we wathced the airplane flying v-e-r-y slowly moving northbound. Damndest thing (and I've seen a few things in my years) I'd seen in a long time, I was sold on electric power after that.
later,
Gary

Cool! Next time I'm in the Sacto area I'd like to stop by your field. Can I get a map some place? And would you let a FRCM member fly there?

The field is north of Wheatland ca, it is located at the Sleep train ampitheater in the east parking lot. For me, its a 45 min drive. Maybe see you at the swap meet on saturday? The rc counrty swap meet is probably one of (if not) the largest in the north state. A guess woudl be perpbably 150-200++ people selling lies and talking ariplanes and such.
Again, it is at 61st and folsom blvd, sacto, ca not too far from hiway 50 and hiway 99.
Do a google and you can see it is easy to find. R/C country is 13,000 square foot ( that is not a misprint) large hobby shop. Largest "LHS" west of Chicago.
The swap is held in the two parking lots, on both sides of a building that looks like a giant warehouse. Right on the corner, you can't miss it, often caues a traffic jam.

That would be a 192 mile drive for me! Don't think I'll make it this weekend, but I'll definately stop by your LHS the next time I'm going through Sacto!
It looks like you've got a pretty good air strip just east of the Sleep train ampitheater. That'd be one heck of a drive for me!!! Eh.. I'll stop by some time.
Have a good one! And, again, thanks for the info!
