RE: Air Hogs Aero Ace!
Thanks for link! Some really nice models and the AA Tom Kat with the
functioning elevons was interesting.
The link to Bradley's FF planes shows some very nice detailed models using
printed tissue and formed plastic canopies.
Also amazing was the conversion of an AH EZ charger to micro RC.

RE: Air Hogs Aero Ace!
well...
I had to prove the instructions wrong and I really can't fly my Aero Ace in a two car garage.
One of the interplane struts came loose.
Should I leave it off and remove the other one too or put it back on?
Is there a noticeable weight savings?
Thanks!
JLK

jlk, it will fly fine without the spar. In fact, if I remeber correctly, it stunts better without the spars. Have you done the turn without throttle mod yet? That is probably the single most important mod for the airplane.
Go Monster.

Thanks for the reply!
No...I'm afraid I haven't been brave enough to try the turn without the throttle mod although I can see it would be very valuable keeping it off the house roof, etc...
Don't ask me how I know that[X(]
I have done the throttle return spring mod though so I have been inside the Tx.

RE: Air Hogs Aero Ace!
What glue sticks to the foam of the wings of the AA biplane?
My wing struts had popped loose from the upper wing, apparently a fairly common failure. Got out the old 5-min epoxy, no problem, stuck them back on. Next day, one close encounter with a garage door later, BOTH struts had popped loose from the bottom of the upper wings again. All the epoxy had bonded very well to the strut, and not at all to the wing.
I couldn't be more surprised. First time I've EVER seen epoxy be reluctant to bond to any kind of foam. It definitely had the chance to bond. I pressed it well, and it was definitely in god contact. Now the hardened epoxy on the strut, is shaped exactl like the bottom of the upper wing.
I trimmed the hardened epoxy off the top of the struts with a razor blade (it was WELL bonded to the strut), and stuck the struts onto the lower surface of the upper wing with Gorilla Glue this time. Good news, it didn't melt the foam at all. And it seems to be bonded on BOTH surfaces pretty well. Flight tests will tell.
What do you all use to glue things to your wings on an AA biplane?

neurotex,
i edit my posts a lot, either because of typos or additional information. when i've written something long, i always copy it to the clipboard first, just to make sure i dont get that error message (very frustrating!).
i've used the fishing bobber glow sticks for some night flying on my AAs, they weigh far more than LEDs, but not enough to hurt performance and they're certainly bright enough. dirt cheap too.
on RCG there's some threads going about that yellow estes, the designer posts there too. he's mentioned many times that he tried to get rid of the 1.5 second cuttoff and auto power shutoff, but the "higher ups" kept it part of the system. its whats kept me from buying one, i think it would drive me nuts. a number of people have swapped out the stock electronics and put in AA bipe/Jet gear and they said it flew great. most folks have been saying that the foam breaks easily - no EPP here! Estes has two other planes with the same electronics, the backyard flyer, and a delta wing type thing. the one thing i'm interested in is the props. i havent been able to tell from the pictures yet, but they look like the Estes Aero-X props, but bigger. those were good little props, but hard to come by unless you order them.

Tim,
I looked back thru the posts for the turning mod that I had seen.
Seems the link I thought went to it doesn't work for me.
Can you help and PM me the correct link?
Thanks!

RE: Air Hogs Aero Ace!
Jlk, check on the aero ace mods thread, I believe the second version is the one I do. Back in a second...Yep the second version is the one I use. Post 391. You may want to check out the aeroace mods thread anyway, it should always be the first thread on this forum.
For those interested I will most likely do an autopsy on a mini sl today/tonight. I'll take pics of the innerds.
And last of all, for those of you that have never seen a stir stick mod, here are a couple of pics. This plane has never flown in any other configuration. Tim

RE: Air Hogs Aero Ace!
googledperson,
they're just tiny glow sticks. they weigh far more than a couple LEDs, but not enough to cause problems - i used 4 of them and couldnt tell much differance during flight. i bought them at walmart, they come in a pack of 2 or 4, cant remember exactly, but it was cheap, maybe a couple dollars. they'll last all night long too.
Little-Acorn,
i've used just normal super glue on the AAs foam. normal CA will usually eat most foams, but EPP seems to handle it just fine.

Well, the WWI plane is just about ready for covering. It's looking a bit
odd because I'm making it up as I go along. The pilot sits in the nose
with a machine gun made of cf tube while the pilot will be carved from
a foam block.
So far the structure pictured is at about 6 grams. The fuse will reamain
open at the rear so after covering it should weigh about 8 grams.

looks pretty good, neurotex, almost something like a WWI racer/figher with those swept back wings. what will you do for color?

clear with the black & white iron crosses on top. Should have some landing
gear of some kind- looks kind'a flat. The wing tips have no shaped airfoil at
all so I'm wondering about lift. May have to add about 3 degrees to the wing.
Maybe some stilts.

RE: Air Hogs Aero Ace!
Tim,
Success!
I made the no throttle turn mod.
Wasn't bad at all.
I did add some Blenderme tape between the diodes and circuit board as a little protection against them touching it.
I'm afraid it's too windy now to test fly but it worked letting it scoot across my work table.
Thanks!
JLK

Questions where those the same LEDs as the fisher bobber ones with batts? or are they glow sticks? If they are the LEDs that are self contained fish bobber leds how heavy are they and what batteries do they use? how much did they cost?

less than 1/2 gram. They come in red and claim to last 20+ hours.
Not as bright as the LED's of course but that's the trade off.
Cost $3.25 each.
They also had the 3" glow sticks.

Good job jkl, I think you'll be very happy with the result in the air. The other tx mod I have is all three channels. If you only have one plane that is not necessary. Tim

RE: Air Hogs Aero Ace!
OK, This time I know I found something different... It is 2 channel, 3 step throttle - always on , 4.8v nimh I tried one of Ferns batteries and it worked great and saved 12 grams, 78 grams w/nimh "HEAVY", 9.6v charging box and 6 extra props . With a 300' range I can't wait to try it. All this + more was found at kame-apart for $10.00 on clearance.
