I think you'll be pretty happy with purchase, Randy. These planes from Sebart really fill that space between sport models that look like pattern planes and the high end 2 meter stuff. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi guys,
Here's my next question, I've been looking at batteries and I will be using the 6cell packs ? and I see another number i.e. 20c, 25c, 30c, 40c.....which one of those do I use ?

Thanks
Randy

The C rating is essentially the maximum discharge rate. 20C is 20 times the capacity of the battery and is more than enough for pattern flying. The others are heavier and give you more burst, but isn't really necessary for pattern flying.

Looking at Flightmax batteries, the difference between the 4000 and 5000 is just one dollar and the weight difference is 169 grams (5000=844g, 4000=675g). Is 169 grams a lot ?

169 grams is almost 6oz, so it is nearly a half pound heavier. The plane will certainly handle it, but it will fly heavier.

I'm thinking that heavier would be good in windy conditions. Maybe it would be good to have some of both.
Am I correct that I read I use just one battery pack per flight ?

Yes, you would just use 1 per flight. I never liked the idea of adding weight or changing how the plane feels just because it is windier. I think you are better off setting your plane up to fly how you like it and then learning it inside and out as opposed to changing thing between flights. To each their own though. Mine flies fine on smaller packs in the wind.

You might be able to use the 15C 5000ma Flightmax batteries. You just have to be careful how hard you push them. I know some guys are using them in the 10S configuration on 2M ships.

My vote goes to Rhino 3700mAh 25C 600g. I had them on Angel with A5016S and 16x10 prop. Flying time 7-8 minutes without any problem. Rhinos have proved them self over and over again.

I use the Zippy Flightmax 6S 4000 20C pack in my Great Planes Reactor. I have just one pair of them but they have been fantastic! I probably fly about 8 minutes of pattern type aerobatics with a little 3D thrown in here and there. I'll usually end the flight with 3 or 4 touch-n-goes. The plane only weighs about 6 lbs though. I'm not sure what the projected weight of Wind 50 is.

I'm pretty sure those are the batteries I'm going to order.

Now on to reciever battery, I noticed in Steve's plane he has a flat lithium type battery (maybe 2.5 inches square) and I searched and see they are 7.4 volts, so I'll need a regulator to take that down to a voltage I can safely plug into my reciever ? and that will operate the servos ?

Steve, my theory is to get all these beginner questions answered here then I won't be such a pain in the butt at the field.

Weight of the Wind 50 is about 80 oz. if there are still 16 oz. in a pound then it will weigh about 5 lbs. so that sounds good.

Nope. When flying electric planes there is only 14 oz in a pound.

For planes this size I usually run a BEC instead of an RX battery. In fact, I ran a BEC in my Wind 110 last year too. You just wire them into the power leads that come into the ESC from the battery. Basically, they are a switching voltage regulator that draws power from your main motor battery to power the radio. Among other things, it saves some weight. The other nice thing is that you don't have to bother seperately charging an RX battery. For 6S packs, look at the CC BEC that Castle Creations sells. It's designed to work with your controller. You'll get lots of opinions about why you shouldn't use a BEC but I've been using them for years on planes this size and larger and I've never had a problem with it.

Randy,

Yes, you will need a receiver battery. You can use a 2 cell lipo and a regulator to bring the voltage down to 6v. You can probably fly all day on a 700mah or so receiver pack. I use a 910 which I only drain 50% on a full day or a smaller 480 if I want to be lighter. The weight difference is minimal so getting some extra capacity for safety margin is a good thing.

For the regulator, there are a bunch out there. I have used both Smartfly and Jaccio. I like the Jaccio from Central Hobbies because it has the smart switch feature. both regulators work fine.

With the batteries installed the plane will be right at 7lbs. Seba's weight's arent very accurate on the site. I've talked to two people with them and they are all in the same ball park within an ounce or two. RX battery is optional. The CC ESC you purchased has the BEC built in and I had a long talk with Dave Lockhart about it. He says he uses it with no problems on his planes he flies that are this size. If you decide not to use the BEC and run a separate RX battery like I did (purely because I had it here and wasnt doing anything else with it), you will have to disable the BEC on the controller. On the 75, it can no be disabled through the software, so you need to cut the red lead, or pull that pin out so that you have ground and signal. I didn't want to do this on my controller, so I plugged it into a short entension and modified the extension. You can run the BEC though without any problems and if I had to do it all over again, I probably would leave the separate pack out of mine, just to save a couple of ounces.

You're right, Arch. The Ice 75 does have a built in ESC. My Ice 80HV does not and I assumed that the Ice 75 didn't either. I guess that's what I get for making assumptions. Not long ago ESCs this size never had a built in ESC. Apparently that has changed. Sorry about that, Dave. Here are the specs on the Ice 75's built in BEC taken from Castle's own website.
Phoenix Ice brings the ability to run at input voltages of up to 8S* (33.6) and use the built in switching BEC to output up to 5 amps of servo power all the way up to the 8S max*!

Switching BEC
The Phoenix Ice switching BEC output is factory set to 5.0V. Users may use Castle Link to select their desired voltage between 5.0V and 7.0V, in 0.1V increments.

It looks like a pretty good unit. I'd definitely be using the built-in BEC if that were my plane. Then I'd wire it up with a Maxx Products arming switch. I use those arming switches (#6972) on nearly everything. They work great!

Mike,

I was surprised to see the 75 had it as well. I also assumed it didn't and had the separate pack in the plane before I realized this bit of info.

Had I not cut the whole in the side of the fuse for the switch, I'd just pull the stuff out, but I don't want the hole there. Could easily be modified and make look perfect, but I'm not that motivated.

The Castle HV controllers do not have built in BECs, the non-HV ICE and Phoenix ones have them.

Well, we knew what he meant.

JFYI:

ESC=Electronic Speed Control
BEC=Battery Elimination Circuit

Most all of our electric planes today use an ESC. I do remember some way back that some used a simple on/off switch or a rheostat. I never gave electric power a second thought back then. Many of today's electric planes use a BEC. Some ESC's have a BEC built right in. Other ESC do not have a BEC and if you want to use one you have to buy it separately and wire it in. Awhile back I suggested that Castle Creations make their non BEC equiped ESCs with a plug that could be used without having to hard wire the BEC in but I don't think that went too far. I still think it's a good idea.

Now I'm confused, which one did I buy ? Does it matter ?, I'm going to use a separate receiver battery, I like the idea that If I fly a litte too long there will be no danger of losing power to my servos or receiver.

If that’s true, it has an internal BEC. Sorry about the confusion that was my fault.

In the programming of the BEC is something called an LVC (Low Voltage Cutoff) that will insure that you can never run the motor so long as to not have radio power. The way I use it is to set it to soft cutoff. What happens with soft cutoff is that when the battery gets low the throttle is cut to half output. When you're flying, you notice this and land the plane. You don’t have to land that very second just don’t fly several circuits before you land. It's that easy. You can also go to a 5000 mAh battery. Unless you like extended flight times you'll generally never run it down into LVC . Of course, there is nothing wrong with using an RX battery too. I just think you'd like the convenience of running a BEC. You just bring your charged batteries to the field and fly, fly, fly.

Now I'm confused, which one did I buy ? Does it matter ?, I'm going to use a separate receiver battery, I like the idea that If I fly a litte too long there will be no danger of losing power to my servos or receiver.

Default RE: Help for the new guy

Thanks Mike

No worries, I did some research and kinda figured it out. I like the idea of the 5000's
